# Collision and Structural Repair

Collision and structural repair on a recreational vehicle rebuilds the load paths and the skin that an impact deformed. It spans front and rear cap damage, sidewall punctures, laminate separation, bent chassis rails and the hidden framing behind them, and finishes with the panel fit and refinish work that makes the repair disappear.

A recreational vehicle is a building bolted to a chassis, and it fails like a building. The outer skin is a thin stressed membrane. Behind it sits a cage of aluminum or steel tube, a foam or lauan core, and a set of adhesive bond lines that were never designed to be hit. When something strikes that assembly, the skin is simply the first thing the energy meets. It is almost never the last.

That single fact explains most of what surprises owners about collision work on a coach. A parking lot scrape that looks like a two hundred dollar buff can turn out to have snapped a section of the sidewall cage. A tree branch strike on the roof edge can travel down the corner post and show up as a slide out that suddenly binds. A rear cap tap from a hitch can crack a fiberglass corner while quietly opening a seam that will let water in for the next three seasons. The relationship between what you can see and what has actually happened is weak, and it stays weak until the panel comes off.

The work in this category is organized around that reality. Every job starts by establishing what moved, not what looks bad. Panel gaps get measured. Doors and compartment latches get cycled, because a door that has started to drag is telling you the opening is no longer square. Seams get read for the fine crazing that shows a laminate has flexed past its bond strength. Where a chassis is involved, the rails get measured against factory datum points before anyone reaches for a pull chain. Only then does the repair plan get written, because a plan built on a walkaround is a plan that will need a supplement.

OCRV Center works on these vehicles at 23281 La Palma Ave in Yorba Linda, roughly nineteen miles from Lake Forest by way of the 241, the 91 and the 5 or 55. Owners drive that stretch because collision work on a forty foot coach needs a bay tall enough to open the roof, a frame rack rated for the weight, and a paint booth long enough to shoot the whole body in one pass. Those are facility problems before they are skill problems, and most general body shops in south Orange County simply cannot take the vehicle in the door.

## Questions

### My RV looks like it only has surface damage. Do I really need a structural assessment?

Usually yes, and the reason is construction. A coach sidewall is a bonded sandwich, so a strike that leaves a shallow dent in the skin may have broken the adhesive bond over a much larger area or bent a stud behind it. The tell is rarely the dent itself. It is a door that has started to rub, a compartment latch that needs a push, a seam that has opened a hair, or a slide that hesitates. If any of those changed after the incident, the damage is not surface damage and an assessment is worth the hour it takes.

### How long does a collision repair on a motorhome usually take?

Light panel and refinish work commonly runs one to three weeks. Cap replacement, sidewall sectioning or anything involving the cage typically runs four to ten weeks. Major rebuilds run longer. The two variables that move the schedule most are parts and insurance. Molded caps, moldings and trim for a discontinued model can take weeks to source, and a supplement written after teardown has to be reviewed and approved before the work continues. We build both into the estimate so the date we give you is a date built on the actual sequence, not an optimistic one.

### Will insurance cover structural repair on an RV?

Comprehensive and collision coverage generally does, subject to your policy and deductible. What matters in practice is documentation. Carriers fund what is proven, and hidden structural damage is not proven by a photograph of a cracked cap. We photograph the teardown in stages, record measurements against factory specification, and write the supplement with the exposed condition visible in the file. OCRV Center is not affiliated with or endorsed by any insurance carrier, and we work with your adjuster on the repair plan rather than around them.

### What is the difference between a repair and a rebuild on a coach?

A repair returns the existing structure to shape. A rebuild replaces it. The line falls where the material has been worked past what it will take: aluminum tube that has kinked rather than bent, laminate that has sheared at the bond line across a wide area, a fiberglass cap with radiating cracks from multiple impact points, or a chassis rail with a stress crack. Bent can be pulled. Kinked, sheared and cracked get cut out and replaced, because straightening damaged material only hides that it has already yielded.

### Can you work on my RV if it is not drivable?

Yes. A substantial share of the collision work at OCRV Center arrives on a transport truck rather than under its own power, and that is normal for major damage. Arrange transport to the Yorba Linda facility and we will receive the vehicle, photograph its arrival condition, and begin the assessment. Please note that we perform the repair work at the shop only, so the vehicle does need to reach us. We can talk through the intake sequence and what documentation to bring by phone at (949) 799-3387.

### Do you repair trailers and fifth wheels, or only motorized coaches?

Both, along with camper vans, truck campers, toy haulers, cargo trailers and commercial bodies. Towables actually make up a large portion of structural work because their failure modes are distinct. Fifth wheel pin boxes and upper decks take shock loading that motorhomes never see, travel trailer A-frames bend from jackknifing, and trailer sidewalls delaminate faster because they flex more in transit. The construction is different enough that the repair plan is different, but the same cage, core and skin logic applies.
