# Detailing and Reconditioning in Lake Forest, CA

## Measure the film before you remove any of it

Machine correction works by removing a very thin layer of the surface to level out the defects in it. That means the first question is how much material there is to remove, and the honest way to answer it is with a coating thickness gauge rather than by looking.

A coach with healthy clear coat has room for a full correction. A coach that has already been polished aggressively, or one where the clear has thinned from years of Southern California ultraviolet exposure, may only have room for a single light pass. Reading the film at multiple points on every panel produces a map, and the plan is built to the thinnest reading rather than the average.

Gelcoat behaves differently from painted clear coat. It is much thicker, which is why heavily oxidized fiberglass can often be brought back dramatically, but oxidation on gelcoat runs deeper than it does on clear and takes more cutting to reach sound material. Knowing which surface you are working on, and there are frequently both on the same coach, changes the pad, the compound and the speed.

## Decontamination is the step that determines everything after it

Washing removes what is loose. It does not remove what is bonded, and a coach that lives outdoors in Orange County accumulates a great deal that is bonded: mineral deposits from sprinklers, industrial fallout, rail dust, tree sap, and a fine layer of oxidized surface that a wash mitt slides straight over.

Chemical decontamination handles the mineral and ferrous deposits, and mechanical decontamination with a clay medium removes what remains embedded in the surface. The test is simple. A clean plastic bag over the hand, drawn across a washed panel, reveals texture that the bare hand does not feel. When the surface goes smooth, decontamination is done.

Skipping this stage is the single most common reason a correction and coating job disappoints. Compounding over embedded contamination drags it across the paint and installs the fine scratching that the correction was supposed to remove. Coating over contamination locks it in permanently under a layer that is meant to last years.

## Correction, and the difference between cutting and hiding

Multi-stage correction is a cutting step to level defects followed by refining steps to restore clarity. Done properly, the result is permanent within the life of the finish because the defects have been removed rather than filled. Done as a single pass with a filler heavy product, the coach looks excellent for six weeks and then returns to how it looked before, because the fillers have washed out.

The process is evaluated with light rather than by eye alone. A dedicated inspection light at a low angle reveals swirl and holograms that ordinary shop lighting hides completely, and it is what we work under while refining. It is also why a car that looked perfect at the shop can look disappointing in direct sun: the defects were always there and only the lighting changed.

On the scale of a coach this is a substantial amount of labor, which is worth being direct about. A full correction on a forty foot sidewall is measured in days, not hours. That is why we start with a test section, show you the result against the untouched surface next to it, and let you decide how far to take it before the whole vehicle is committed.

## Protection: sealant, wax and ceramic coating

A corrected surface with nothing on it starts oxidizing again immediately, and in this climate that happens fast. The protection choice is a trade between durability, cost and how the surface will be maintained.

Ceramic coating is the durable option. It bonds to the surface, adds real chemical and ultraviolet resistance, and makes the coach dramatically easier to wash because contamination has much less to key into. It also demands the most from the preparation, since the coating is only as good as the surface it bonds to and any contamination or polishing oil left behind prevents proper bonding. Panels are wiped down with a dedicated preparation solution immediately before coating for exactly that reason.

Cure conditions matter too. A coating applied and then rained on before it has cured is a coating that has to be removed and redone. Coaches stay in the shop through the initial cure rather than going home the same afternoon, which is a scheduling consideration worth knowing about before the appointment is set.

## Roof, awning fabric and the black streak problem

Black streaks down the sides of a coach come from the roof, and washing them off the sidewall without addressing the roof means doing it again after the next rain. The roof surface, whether it is a rubber membrane, thermoplastic or fiberglass, accumulates a film that runs down the edges with every wetting.

Roof cleaning is done with products appropriate to the membrane, and this is a place where the wrong chemical does lasting damage. Petroleum based cleaners will attack a rubber membrane. Aggressive scrubbing on an aged membrane removes material that is not coming back. We identify the roof material first and clean it accordingly, and we treat the roof as an inspection opportunity while we are up there.

Awning fabric, sealant beads and roof mounted equipment all get looked at during this work, since access is already established. Finding a lifting sealant bead during a detail is considerably cheaper than finding the resulting water intrusion during an evaluation eighteen months later.

## Trim, lenses and interior reconditioning

Exterior plastics and rubber go grey and chalky under ultraviolet exposure, and there is a real difference between dressing them, which looks good briefly, and restoring them, which involves cleaning the degraded surface off and applying a product that penetrates. On a coach with a lot of black trim the difference is visible from across a parking lot.

Headlight and marker lens restoration follows the same logic as paint correction: the yellowed layer is removed by progressive abrasion and then the surface is protected, because polished polycarbonate with no protection hazes again within months. Restoration without that final protective step is a service that undoes itself.

Inside, reconditioning covers upholstery and carpet extraction, hard surface cleaning, cabinetry cleaning and conditioning, and odor treatment. Odor work is the part worth understanding: masking is temporary, and lasting results come from removing the source, which occasionally means the reconditioning turns up a moisture problem that belongs in the evaluation service instead.

## Questions

### Can my oxidized RV be brought back or does it need painting?

In most cases it can be brought back, and gelcoat responds particularly well because there is a lot of material to work with. The determining factor is whether the finish is oxidized or failed. Oxidation is a degraded surface layer that can be cut through to sound material underneath. A clear coat that has begun to peel or flake has delaminated, and there is nothing sound to polish to. We take film thickness readings and complete a test section first, so you can see the achievable result on your own coach before committing to the whole vehicle.

### How long does a ceramic coating last on an RV in this climate?

Realistically several years on vertical panels with sensible maintenance, and less on horizontal surfaces that take direct sun all day. Southern California ultraviolet exposure is the limiting factor rather than mileage. The other variable is aftercare: washing with harsh detergents or running through a brush wash degrades a coating considerably faster than a proper two bucket wash with a pH neutral product. We provide maintenance guidance with the job because how the coach is washed afterward has as much effect on longevity as the coating itself.

### Why do black streaks keep coming back after I wash them off?

Because they originate on the roof, not on the sidewall. The roof surface accumulates a film that mobilises with every rain and runs down the edges, so cleaning the sides treats the symptom. The lasting fix is cleaning the roof with a product appropriate to the membrane material and then keeping it clean, and on some coaches a treatment on the roof edge helps considerably. We identify the roof material before cleaning, because the wrong chemistry on a rubber membrane causes damage that cannot be undone.

### Is a full correction worth it on a coach I plan to sell?

Frequently yes, and it is one of the few services where the return is easy to see. A coach that presents as chalky and neglected invites every buyer to assume the same about the systems, and the price conversation starts from a much lower place. A corrected and protected exterior changes the first impression completely. If the budget is limited, a partial approach that concentrates on the areas a buyer sees first delivers most of the visual benefit for considerably less labor, and we are happy to scope it that way.

### Do I have to leave the coach overnight for a coating?

Yes, usually longer than one night on a full vehicle. The correction itself takes days on a large coach, and once the coating is applied it needs its initial cure in controlled conditions before the vehicle is exposed to rain or heavy dew. A coating that gets wet before it has cured has to be removed and redone, which nobody wants to pay for twice.
