## Pressurize, isolate, then look for the drop

Water leaks in a coach are found by pressure, not by looking. The system is charged with regulated air or water to a known pressure with the pump off and every fixture closed, then watched on a gauge. A system that holds is sound. A system that bleeds down has a leak, and the rate of the drop tells you roughly how large it is.

Isolation comes next. Fixtures are valved off one branch at a time and the test repeated until the drop disappears, which narrows the search to a single run before anyone opens a wall. This matters in a coach because the plumbing runs through cabinet bases, under the floor and behind panels that are expensive to remove speculatively.

Where the run is genuinely hidden, a borescope through the smallest available access, a thermal reading on hot lines, or an ultrasonic listen at the fitting locations closes the gap. What we avoid is the approach that pulls three panels off to find a fitting that a pressure test could have identified in fifteen minutes.

## Pump, accumulator and the city water inlet

A demand pump that short cycles with all fixtures closed is reporting a leak, a failed check valve or a waterlogged accumulator. Those three are distinguished by isolating the pump outlet: if cycling stops, the leak is downstream; if it continues, the pump internals or its check valve are the issue.

Pump noise complaints usually trace to mounting rather than to the pump. A pump bolted hard to a plywood floor turns the floor into a soundboard. Correct isolator mounts, a short section of flexible line on inlet and outlet, and a strainer that is actually clear will quiet most installations dramatically without replacing anything.

The city water inlet is a separate path with its own check valve, and it is the reason a coach can be fine on the pump and leak on the pedestal or the reverse. Park pressure in Southern California can run high enough to damage fittings, so a regulator is not optional equipment. We check regulator function under flow, not just at rest, because many of them read correctly static and fail to limit under demand.

## Fresh water lines, fittings and the material question

Most coaches built in the last two decades run cross linked polyethylene tubing with crimp rings or expansion fittings, and the failure points are almost always the fittings rather than the tubing. A crimp made with the wrong die, a ring installed too close to the shoulder, or a fitting installed on tubing that was cut at an angle will weep for years before it becomes obvious.

Older coaches carry polybutylene, gray tubing with acetal fittings that becomes brittle with age and ultraviolet exposure. Where a coach still has it, we advise replacing runs as they are accessed rather than doing a whole coach at once, since the cost of access is most of the job and doing it while a wall is already open is far cheaper than returning.

Fitting selection matters where dissimilar materials meet. Brass into plastic, thread sealant choice, and support of the tubing so it is not carrying weight at a fitting are the details that decide whether the repair is permanent. Lines are secured with clamps at proper intervals so vibration on the 241 does not work a joint loose over a season.

## Gray and black tanks, valves and vent behavior

Holding tanks fail in three ways: the tank itself cracks or separates at a seam, a gate valve seizes or stops sealing, or the discharge plumbing develops a leak at a glued joint. Each has a different diagnosis and only one of them requires dropping a tank.

Cracks most often appear at mounting points where the tank was supported on straps that let it flex, or at the seam on a blow molded tank that took an impact from road debris. Repair of polyethylene is done by welding the same material rather than by adhesive, because nothing sticks reliably to polyethylene and a patched tank that is glued will open again.

Valves are the more common job. A cable operated gate valve that will not close fully is usually a seized blade, a broken cable or debris on the seat. Replacing a valve means dropping the flange, cleaning the seat, and setting new seals with the correct fastener pattern so the flange is not distorted. Roof vents are checked at the same time, since a blocked vent creates a vacuum that makes tanks drain slowly and pushes odor back into the coach through a dried out trap.

## Tank sensors, monitors and why they read wrong

The traditional probe style sensor reads by conducting through the tank contents to a stud in the wall of the tank. Anything that coats that stud, which in a black tank means exactly what you would expect, holds a permanent reading regardless of the actual level. The sensor is not broken. It is being told a false story by a film.

Cleaning is the first attempt and it works more often than owners expect, using a tank wand and a proper detergent treatment rather than a chemical that only masks odor. Where cleaning does not restore the reading, external sensor strips that read through the tank wall avoid the problem entirely, and they can usually be fitted without dropping the tank.

Monitor panels themselves do fail, and the way to tell is at the panel connector. Shorting the sensor input should drive the segment. If it does not, the panel or its wiring is at fault and no amount of tank cleaning will change the display.

## Fixtures, toilets and the wet bay

Faucets, shower valves and the toilet are the parts of the water system owners interact with, and they are also the parts most likely to be replaced rather than repaired because cartridge availability on older coach fixtures is poor. We fit residential grade fixtures where the plumbing and the counter allow it, since they last longer and parts are obtainable.

Toilet complaints usually come down to the ball seal or the water valve. A bowl that will not hold water has a seal that has hardened or has debris on the seat, and a toilet that runs continuously has a valve that is not closing. Both are inexpensive parts, and both are frequently misdiagnosed as needing a whole new toilet.

The wet bay is where everything meets: the city inlet, the pump, the winterizing valve set, the filter housing and often the water heater bypass. A confusing wet bay is the reason many owners inadvertently leave a bypass open and then report a water heater that will not fill. We label valve positions during service so the panel is readable rather than a puzzle.


## Questions

### My water pump keeps cycling with all the taps off. What is leaking?

Something is losing pressure, and the fastest way to find out what is to isolate the pump. If cycling stops when the outlet is valved off, the leak is downstream in the coach and we pressure test branch by branch to locate it. If the pump keeps cycling while isolated, the internal check valve is passing and the pump head needs service. A waterlogged accumulator produces a similar symptom with rapid short cycles. Those three cover nearly every case and the isolation test separates them in a few minutes.

### My black tank monitor says full right after I dumped. Is the sensor broken?

Usually not. Probe style sensors read by conducting through the contents to a stud inside the tank, and a film of residue on that stud holds the reading permanently. Cleaning with a tank wand and an enzyme or detergent treatment restores it a good share of the time. When it does not, external sensor strips that read through the tank wall are the durable answer and they typically install without dropping the tank. We test the monitor panel itself first so we are not cleaning a tank to fix a wiring fault.

### Can a cracked holding tank be repaired or does it need replacing?

Polyethylene tanks can be welded with the same material, and a properly executed weld is a permanent repair. Adhesive patches are not, because effectively nothing bonds reliably to polyethylene. Whether repair makes sense depends on where the crack is and why it happened. A crack at an unsupported mounting point will simply reopen unless the support is corrected at the same time, so we address the cause along with the tank. Where the tank is separated at a molded seam or the damage is extensive, replacement is the sound call and we will say so.

### Do I need a water pressure regulator at the campground?

Yes, and it should be an adjustable one with a gauge rather than the small inline brass type. Park pressures vary widely and some loops in this region run high enough to damage fittings and fixtures inside a coach. Just as important, we test regulators under flow. Many of them read correctly when nothing is running and fail to limit pressure the moment a faucet opens, which is the condition that actually causes damage. Bring yours in with the coach and it can be checked as part of the service.

### Why does my coach smell even after I dump and rinse?

The most common cause is a vent problem rather than a tank problem. If the roof vent is blocked or the anti-siphon device has failed, the tank cannot breathe, it drains slowly and it pushes odor back through the toilet or a dried trap. The second cause is a trap that has evaporated during storage, which is solved with water and a small amount of mineral oil. The third is a residue film on the tank walls that no amount of rinsing removes without a wand. We check the vent path first because it is the cheapest and most frequently correct answer.
