# Dent and Bumper Repair in Lake Forest, CA

Dent repair on a recreational vehicle divides along the substrate. Aluminum skin dents are metal work complicated by a bonded panel with no access from behind. ## Same word, two unrelated jobs

Owners call it a dent because that is what it looks like, and on a recreational vehicle that single word covers two repairs that share no tools, no materials and no method. Aluminum skin deforms plastically. It takes a shape from an impact and it holds that shape, which means the metal is intact and the repair is about persuading it back where it started. Fiberglass does not behave that way at all. A laminate panel flexes under load and then either returns to shape, cracks, or separates from the core behind it. What reads as a dent in fiberglass is almost always cracking or delamination wearing a dent's appearance.

Telling them apart is not always obvious from a walk around, particularly on units where a fiberglass front cap meets aluminum sidewalls or where a laminated sidewall sits above a painted skirt. Construction, a coating thickness gauge and a tap test settle it quickly. A tap over sound laminate returns a sharp sound and a tap over delaminated laminate returns a dull one, and the boundary between the two can be mapped by ear across a panel in minutes. That map is what determines the size of the repair, and it is routinely larger than the visible mark.

This matters commercially as much as technically. An aluminum crease and a fiberglass impact of the same visible size can differ several times over in hours, and an estimate written without establishing which one is in front of you is a guess. It is also why we ask the vehicle to come to the Yorba Linda facility for the estimate rather than working from photographs. Photographs show the mark. They do not show whether the panel behind it is still bonded, and that is the question that sets the price.

## Aluminum skin and the problem of no back side

Aluminum sided trailers and older motorhomes carry a very thin skin, either flat or corrugated, attached to a wood or aluminum frame and backed with insulation and an interior wall. Automotive dent repair assumes you can reach behind a panel and push, and on this construction you usually cannot. The interior finish would have to come off, the insulation would have to come out, and even then the framing sits exactly where the leverage would need to be. That access problem, more than the metal itself, is what makes aluminum coach work slower than it looks.

What remains available is working from the outside. Shallow dents in flat skin can often be drawn out with a stud welder and slide hammer or with glue pull tabs, followed by shrinking any stretched metal with controlled heat so the panel sits flat rather than oil canning between fasteners. Aluminum is less forgiving than steel here, since it work hardens quickly and cracks rather than stretching once it has been moved too many times, so the number of attempts is limited and each one has to count. A modest skim of filler over a shape that has been properly restored is normal practice. Filler used to build the shape itself is not, and it will telegraph within a year.

Corrugated skin adds a constraint that decides many of these jobs. The ridges are a structural and visual pattern, and a repair that flattens or distorts them is visible from across a parking lot no matter how good the paint is. Where a crease has crossed several ridges, restoring the pattern is frequently more work than replacing a section of skin between two seams, and section replacement is often the cleaner answer. Skins come in long panels and the rivet or seam lines are natural boundaries, so a full width section can be removed and renewed with the joints landing where joints already exist rather than in the middle of a wall.

## Where paintless dent removal genuinely applies here

Paintless dent removal is an excellent technique inside its limits, and the limits are what get misrepresented. It works by massaging metal back to shape from behind, or by pulling it from the front with adhesive tabs, while the existing finish stretches with the movement instead of cracking. That requires two conditions: access to the back of the panel or a surface that will hold a glue tab, and a finish flexible enough to survive being moved. Where both hold, the result is excellent and it avoids refinishing entirely, which on a coach is the expensive part.

On a recreational vehicle, access is the condition that usually fails. A laminated sidewall is a bonded sandwich with no cavity to reach into. An aluminum skin has framing and insulation immediately behind it. That leaves glue pulling as the realistic front side method, and glue pulling works well on flat skin with a sound finish and poorly on anything corrugated, oxidized or already thin. The second condition fails often too. A finish that has been baking in Orange County sun for a decade has lost flexibility, and moving metal underneath a brittle clear coat produces a network of fine cracks that turns a repairable dent into a refinish.

The places it does pay off on this kind of work are worth naming, because it saves real money when it applies. Steel and aluminum compartment doors are frequently open at the back and can be worked conventionally. Cab and cowl panels on a Class C, a chassis cab or a van body are automotive construction and respond exactly as a car would. Hail dimpling on a sound painted surface is often a strong candidate, since the deformation is shallow and the finish is undisturbed. What we will not do is sell paintless work on a panel where it is going to crack the finish and then present the refinish as an additional item afterward. Whether it is viable gets decided in front of the vehicle, before it starts.

## Fiberglass takes an impact differently

A molded fiberglass cap is a laminate with a pigmented gelcoat surface, and it responds to an impact by cracking rather than denting. The most common pattern is a star or spider crack radiating from the point of contact, which can look minor and cosmetic while the laminate underneath has fractured over a much wider area. Filling and painting over that surface hides it for a season and then the crack pattern prints back through the new finish, because the structure below is still moving.

Laminated sidewalls fail in a different way again. These are thin fiberglass bonded to a foam or lauan core, and an impact or long term water intrusion breaks that bond. The result is delamination: an area where the outer skin is no longer attached to what is behind it. It shows as a wave, a bubble or a soft spot, and it feels different under a hand than the sound panel around it. Delamination is not repaired by pushing the surface back out, because there is nothing behind it to push against and nothing holding it once it gets there.

The correct repair on either is structural. Cracked laminate is ground back to sound material with a taper, rebuilt in layers of glass and resin to restore the original thickness and stiffness, faired flat and then finished either in matched gelcoat or in primer and paint depending on what the surrounding surface is. Delaminated areas are opened or injected so adhesive can reach the void, then clamped or vacuum drawn back down until the bond is restored, and any wet core is removed and replaced rather than dried in place. Both cross into work we handle under fiberglass repair and delamination repair, and on a large area those are the better starting points. What matters for an owner looking at what appears to be a dent in a fiberglass panel is that the visible mark is a symptom, and the repair is sized by what the tap test finds around it.

## Bumper covers and fascias: fixing against buying

The first question on any bumper or fascia is what it is made of, because the repair method follows directly from the material. Thermoplastic covers, typically a polyolefin blend, can be plastic welded, with material of the same family melted into a prepared groove to rebuild a crack or a torn mounting tab from the back and the front. Thermoset urethane and fiberglass fascias cannot be welded and are repaired with structural adhesives and reinforcement. Getting this wrong wastes the repair, since adhesive on an untreated olefin surface will release and welding rod of the wrong family will not fuse.

The repair against replacement decision comes down to hours, part cost and availability, and it lands differently on different vehicles. On a van, a light truck or a chassis cab, covers are stocked, reasonably priced and quick to hang, so replacement is frequently the cheaper and better outcome. On a motorhome, the fascia is often a low volume moulding specific to a model year, and where the manufacturer has stopped producing it there is no part to buy at any price. Repair then becomes the only route, and a properly welded and reinforced cover on a coach is a legitimate long term answer rather than a compromise, provided the mounting points are rebuilt as carefully as the visible surface.

Two things behind the cover decide whether the finished job looks right. The first is the mounting structure: absorbers, brackets, impact bars and the tabs the cover hangs from. A cover fitted to bent structure will never sit flush no matter how well it is repaired, and the gaps are the first thing anyone notices. The second is anything mounted in the fascia, which on newer chassis increasingly includes parking sensors, cameras and lighting that have to come out, go back and function afterward. Refinishing a flexible cover also requires a flex additive in the material, since a rigid film over a component designed to move will crack at the first parking lot contact.

## Rear ends, bumper tubes and hitch area damage on towables

The rear bumper on a travel trailer is not a bumper in the automotive sense. It is a square steel tube welded or bolted to the frame extension, and it commonly does duty as a sewer hose carrier, a ladder mount and sometimes a bike rack anchor. That combination of loads on a thin walled tube produces a predictable set of failures: sagging in the middle, cracked welds at the mounting brackets, and rust that starts inside the tube where water from a stored hose sits and works outward until the wall is gone.

Departure angle damage is the other recurring theme on towables and it is entirely a geometry problem. A long trailer with a rear overhang and low ground clearance will contact the pavement on a steep driveway apron or a gas station transition, and it does so at the rearmost, lowest point. The visible result is scraping and crushing along the bottom rear, but the load has travelled into the frame extension, the bumper mounts and sometimes the rear wall structure above them. Straightening the visible metal without checking those is how a repair comes back.

Toy haulers add the ramp door to the picture, and that changes the stakes. The rear opening is the largest hole in the structure, the door doubles as a loading ramp and carries real weight, and the hinge and latch geometry depends on the opening staying square. Damage at the rear corner of a toy hauler that distorts the opening produces a ramp that binds, latches that will not engage, and a seal that leaks along one edge. Rear frame extensions, hitch receivers welded to them and bumper mounting structure all fall into welding and fabrication work, which we handle in shop, and on anything involving the frame itself the structural assessment comes before the cosmetic repair rather than after it.

## How the work runs

1. Identify the construction. Before anything else we establish what the panel is: aluminum skin over framing, laminated fiberglass over a foam core, a molded cap, or a plastic fascia. The repair paths for those four have almost nothing in common.

2. Map the damage beyond the visible mark. An impact travels. The dent is where it landed, but the framing behind it, the adjacent seams and the seals around nearby openings all get checked, because a repair that ignores a broken frame member will not stay flat.

3. Decide repair against replacement. Hours to repair, part availability, part cost and the condition of the surrounding finish all go into that call. On discontinued components the decision is often made for us, and repair becomes the only route.

4. Restore the shape. Metal is worked back, laminate is ground out and rebuilt, plastic is welded or bonded. Each material has its own sequence and none of them is filler applied over an unresolved shape.

5. Refinish and blend. The repaired area is primed with the correct product for the substrate, colour is read from the vehicle rather than the code, and the new finish is blended outward into the surrounding surface so no boundary exists.

## Questions

### Can a dent in my aluminum sided trailer be pushed out from inside?

Rarely, because there is almost never anything to push from. The skin is backed by insulation and framing, and reaching the back of it means removing interior wall covering and insulation, which usually costs more than repairing from the outside. Practical methods work from the exterior: glue pull tabs or a stud welder and slide hammer to draw the metal back, controlled heat to shrink any stretched area, then a thin skim and refinish. Where a crease crosses several corrugation ridges, replacing a section of skin between existing seams is often cleaner and cheaper than restoring the pattern.

### Is paintless dent removal an option on an RV?

Sometimes, and it depends on two things we check in front of the vehicle. There has to be a way to move the metal, meaning either access behind the panel or a surface sound enough to hold a glue tab, and the finish has to be flexible enough to survive the movement without cracking. Compartment doors, cab and cowl panels, and shallow hail dimpling on sound paint are the strongest candidates. Laminated sidewalls, corrugated skin, sharp creases and any coach with an aged brittle clear coat generally are not, and forcing it there turns a dent into a refinish.

### There is a soft wavy area on my fiberglass sidewall. Is that a dent?

Almost certainly not. Laminated fiberglass sidewalls do not hold a dent, so a wave or a soft spot means the outer skin has separated from the core behind it, which is delamination. Causes are impact or long term water intrusion, and the affected area is usually larger than what you can see. We map it with a tap test and take moisture readings before quoting. The repair restores the bond and replaces any wet core rather than filling the surface, and where the area is extensive it is handled under our delamination repair service.

### Should a cracked RV bumper cover be repaired or replaced?

It depends on whether the part still exists. On vans, light trucks and chassis cabs, covers are stocked and affordable, so replacement is often faster and cheaper. On motorhomes, the fascia is frequently a low volume moulding for one model year, and many are simply no longer produced, which makes a proper repair the only route available. Thermoplastic covers are plastic welded and reinforced from both sides, urethane and fiberglass are repaired with structural adhesive. Either way the mounting structure behind it has to be straight or the finished cover will never sit flush.

### My travel trailer scraped its rear end on a steep driveway. How bad is that?

It varies, and the visible scraping is not what decides it. Contact at the rear happens at the lowest, furthest point, and the load travels forward into the frame extension and the bumper mounts. We look at those before quoting the cosmetic work, because straightening a bumper tube on a bent extension leaves the underlying problem in place. On a toy hauler there is an additional check, since distortion at the rear opening will make the ramp door bind, misalign the latches and leak along one edge, and that has to be corrected before the door will work properly again.

### Do you repair rear bumper tubes and hitch mounts?

Yes, both. Rear bumper tubes on travel trailers rust from the inside out because water from a stored sewer hose sits in them, and they crack at the mounting brackets under ladder and bike rack loads. Those are repaired or replaced by welding at the shop, along with rear frame extensions and receiver hitches welded to them. Anything involving the frame gets a structural assessment first, because the cosmetic repair is only worth doing once the structure underneath it is sound.
