## Film bonds to the top layer and nothing deeper

Vinyl is an adhesive product, and an adhesive is only as attached as the layer it grips. That single fact decides whether a wrap is a reasonable idea on a given vehicle. A coach whose clear coat has begun to chalk, or whose gelcoat has oxidized to the point of releasing powder onto a rag, has a top layer that is already letting go. Film applied over that surface will look correct on the day it is installed and will start lifting at edges and seams within a season, because the adhesive is holding a layer that is separating from everything beneath it.

This is worth saying plainly because of how owners usually arrive at the idea. Someone with a tired coach prices a repaint, prices a wrap, and reads the difference as a saving. On a sound surface that reading is correct and a wrap is genuinely the cheaper route to a new look. On a failing surface it is not an alternative to refinishing at all. It is a delay, and an expensive one, because the film has to come back off later and it will take fragments of the failing surface with it. The refinish that was going to be needed anyway then starts from a worse substrate and costs more than it would have.

Settling the question takes minutes at the shop and it happens before any material is ordered. A test area is washed and dried, tape is applied and pulled to see whether anything comes with it, and a coating thickness gauge reads what is actually present across several panels. Where the surface passes, film is a good answer. Where it does not, the honest recommendation is refinishing first, and applying graphics over the new finish afterward if the owner still wants them. Covering a failing surface does not fix it, and we would rather say so before the film is cut than after it is on.

## Full coverage, partial coverage and where the hours land

A full wrap covers every visible exterior surface in film, which on a coach means both sidewalls, the front and rear caps, compartment doors, and usually the areas that will show when a bay or entry door is open. Doing that properly involves removing far more hardware than owners expect. Every light bezel, badge, handle, ladder mount and mirror base that stays on the vehicle becomes an edge the installer has to cut around, and every cut edge is a place where the film can eventually lift. Removing the part and tucking the film behind it produces a finished look and a much longer service life.

A partial wrap covers a defined zone: a lower third, an accent sweep, a rear cap, a set of side panels. It uses far less material, but the cost does not fall in proportion to the coverage, because the setup, the surface preparation, the layout work and the hardware removal in the affected zone happen either way. Partials make the most sense when the design calls for graphics over a color that is already good, or when the goal is to update an aging scheme without touching a sound finish that has years left in it.

The variables that actually drive labor on a coach are curvature, texture and interruption. A flat sidewall runs fast. A compound curve on a front cap needs the film heated, stretched and post heated so it conforms and stays conformed. Corrugated or riveted skin on an older trailer needs the film worked down into every ridge and around every rivet head, which is slow, hand intensive work that no amount of squeegee technique speeds up. Awning rails, window frames, molding lines and compartment door gaps all break the run and each break costs time. Two vehicles of the same length can differ substantially in hours for exactly these reasons, which is why a written estimate follows an inspection at the shop rather than a phone description.

## Fleet lettering and keeping a run of trucks consistent

Commercial work runs through the same booth and the same installers as the coach work, and the requirements are different in one specific way: consistency across a set of vehicles matters more than perfection on any one of them. A fleet of box trucks, cargo vans, service bodies and trailers is read as a group. A unit whose logo sits two inches lower than the rest, or whose brand blue prints slightly warmer, undermines the whole set even though nobody could point at what is wrong.

Two things produce that consistency. The first is a layout standard measured from features that exist on every unit, so placement is defined relative to the body rather than eyeballed truck by truck. The second is color management on the printer, with the brand color proofed and approved once and then reproduced from the same profile on every subsequent run. That second point matters more over time than it does on the first order, because fleets add units in later years and a logo printed from a fresh guess three years later is the one that will not match.

The base color underneath is the other half of the problem, and it is the half that catches people out. A white truck purchased this year and a white truck purchased several years ago are not the same white anymore, because the older one has been sitting in the sun. Film applied to both will be identical and the surrounding painted surface will not be. Where that difference will show, the options are to extend the film to cover the full panel, to refinish the older units, or to accept it, and the right answer depends on how the vehicles are seen. We will point out where the mismatch will land rather than let it turn up on delivery.

## Rebuilding decals a manufacturer stopped supplying

Manufacturers keep decal kits available for a limited window after a model year closes, and that window is shorter than the life of the vehicle by a wide margin. Owners of coaches and fifth wheels past their first decade routinely discover that the graphics package is simply gone, that the parts department has no listing for it, and that the aftermarket has no equivalent. That is a solvable problem, but the route is reproduction rather than purchase.

The source material is the vehicle itself. Undamaged sections get photographed square on with a measuring reference in frame so the images can be scaled accurately, individual elements get measured directly, and the relationship between each element and nearby body features is recorded. Where a section is missing entirely, the opposite side supplies it in mirror. Where the original film survives but is cracked, it can often be traced or lifted in sections and scanned before it comes off. All of that has to happen before anything is stripped, which is the single most common reason a reproduction becomes harder than it needed to be.

From the measurements and photographs the artwork is redrawn as vector geometry, proofed against the original dimensions, and printed on film chosen to suit where it will live on the body. Colors are the interesting part. A new decal printed to the color the original was when new will sit against a body that has faded around it, so the honest approach is to match the printed color to the surrounding surface as it is today rather than to the archive. Where an owner is also having the coach refinished, that constraint disappears and the original colors can be reproduced properly, which is one argument for sequencing the two jobs together.

## Getting decade old film off without wrecking what is under it

Removing graphics that have spent years in Orange County sun is a different job from removing graphics that went on last year, and it is frequently the larger line on the estimate. Ultraviolet exposure makes the vinyl itself brittle while it makes the adhesive harder and more tenacious. Fresh film peels off in continuous sheets. Old film shatters into chips the size of a fingernail and leaves nearly all of its adhesive on the vehicle, so what should be an afternoon becomes days of patient work across a forty foot side.

The technique that works is heat plus patience. Controlled heat softens the adhesive enough to release without softening the paint or gelcoat underneath, and the film comes off at a shallow angle rather than being pulled straight out, which reduces the load on whatever it is stuck to. Plastic blades do the lifting because steel will gouge. Residual adhesive gets dissolved with a remover chosen for the surface it is sitting on and then wiped, never scrubbed. On single stage paint and on pigmented gelcoat, aggressive solvent or aggressive abrasion will take color with it, and there is no way to put that back short of refinishing.

The result underneath is the part owners are least prepared for. The surface protected by a decal for ten years has not faded, and the surface around it has. Pull the decal and the old layout appears as a ghost outline in a slightly different shade. Correction will reduce that difference by cutting the oxidized surrounding surface back toward the protected color, and on a vehicle whose finish still has material to give it can close the gap almost completely. Where the surrounding finish is too far gone for that, the choices are new graphics covering the same footprint or a refinish, and it is better to plan for that possibility before the old decals come off than to discover it afterward.

## Install conditions and honest expectations for service life

Film is installed indoors at the Yorba Linda facility, in a clean, temperature controlled space, and that is not a preference. Airborne dust that lands on the adhesive side is trapped permanently and shows as a bump under a gloss surface. Wind moves large panels of film and creases them. Cold makes film stiff and resistant to conforming, while direct sun on a dark body heats the panel enough that the adhesive grabs before the installer can position it. Controlling those variables is most of what separates a wrap that lasts from one that fails at the first hot week.

Post heating is the step that decides whether stretched film stays where it was put. Vinyl has memory, and any area that was heated and stretched to conform around a curve or into a channel is under tension that will slowly pull it back toward flat. Bringing that area up to the temperature the manufacturer specifies after installation resets the material so it holds its new shape. Skipping it is invisible on delivery and shows up months later as film lifting out of recesses and pulling back from edges, which is the most common failure we are asked to correct on work done elsewhere.

As for how long it lasts, the useful answer is a range rather than a number, and it depends heavily on orientation. A quality cast film with a protective laminate, installed properly on a vertical surface, commonly gives several years of good appearance in this climate. The sun facing side ages faster than the shaded side on the same vehicle, sometimes dramatically so on a coach parked in the same orientation year after year. Horizontal surfaces such as a front cap top or a roof line take the worst of it and will go first. Washing by hand, keeping pressure washers away from edges and seams, and shading or covering the vehicle during long storage all extend it meaningfully. Nothing extends it as much as where the vehicle spends its summers.

## How the work runs

1. Surface qualification. Before any film is quoted, the existing finish is cleaned, tested for adhesion and read with a thickness gauge. Film bonds to the top layer of whatever it sits on, so a top layer that is already releasing disqualifies the vehicle until it is refinished.

2. Measure, template and proof artwork. Panel dimensions, curvature, hardware locations and seam positions are captured and the artwork is laid out against them. What looks correct on a flat proof can land a logo across an awning rail on the real body.

3. Strip existing film and decontaminate. Old graphics come off with controlled heat and plastic tools, adhesive residue is dissolved rather than scraped, and the whole surface is washed and wiped with a solvent that leaves nothing behind.

4. Remove hardware and mask the perimeter. Lights, badges, handles, mirror bases and trim come off wherever removal is practical, because film tucked behind a removed part will hold and film cut around a fitted part will lift.

5. Apply, squeegee and post heat. Panels go on in a planned sequence with overlaps oriented away from the direction of travel and airflow. Every stretched area is post heated so the film loses its memory and stops trying to return to flat.

6. Trim, seal and hand over care instructions. Edges are trimmed back from panel breaks rather than run to them, high stress edges get sealed, hardware is reinstalled, and the owner leaves knowing what will shorten the film's life and what will not.

## Questions

### How long will a vinyl wrap last on an RV parked outdoors in Southern California?

Several years is a realistic expectation for a quality cast film with a laminate on a vertical surface, and less than that on horizontal surfaces and on whichever side faces the sun where the coach is stored. Ultraviolet load in this region is high and constant, so orientation matters more than brand. Hand washing, keeping pressure washers away from seams and edges, and covering or shading the vehicle during long storage all add time. Film on a coach that lives indoors will outlast the same film on one that never sees a roof.

### Can you wrap over gelcoat that has already oxidized?

Not responsibly. Vinyl adheres to the outermost layer of the surface, and oxidized gelcoat is a layer that is already breaking down and shedding. Film applied to it will lift at the edges within a season and will take pieces of the surface with it when it comes off. The correct sequence on a chalky coach is correction or refinishing first, then film over the restored surface. We test adhesion and read film thickness before quoting, and we will say plainly when the surface does not qualify rather than take the order.

### My fifth wheel's decals are cracking and the manufacturer no longer sells the kit. What now?

They get rebuilt from the vehicle. We photograph the surviving graphics square on with a scale reference, measure every element and its position relative to body features, mirror the opposite side to fill in anything missing, then redraw the artwork as vector geometry and print new film. This all has to happen before the old decals come off, so bring the coach in with the original graphics still in place even if they are in poor condition. Cracked film still carries the information we need.

### Will pulling off old decals damage the paint underneath?

Done with controlled heat, plastic tools and the right adhesive remover, no. Done with a steel blade and a heat gun run too hot, yes, and we see the results of that regularly. The more common issue is not damage but difference in appearance. The area a decal covered has been shielded from ultraviolet exposure for years while everything around it faded, so a ghost outline appears once the film is off. Polishing the surrounding surface reduces or eliminates it depending on how much material the finish still has to give.

### Is a partial wrap enough to change how the coach looks?

Frequently yes, and it is the better value when the existing finish is sound. A lower third, a rear cap, an accent sweep or a set of side panels changes the read of the vehicle at a fraction of full coverage cost. What partial coverage cannot do is hide a color you dislike or a finish that has faded unevenly, since the untouched areas stay exactly as they are and the new film beside them makes the contrast more obvious. Where the base color is the problem, full coverage or a repaint is the honest answer.
