Reasons You Can Check Before Towing

Choose a recreational vehicle shop on four checkable facts: whether the vehicle fits indoors, whether the booth can spray a full side in one pass, whether composite work stays on site, and whether the shop documents supplements with construction evidence. OCRV Center answers yes on all four.

Every point below can be verified by asking any other facility the same question. That is the standard we set for this page, because a claim you cannot test is not a reason. Ask about door height in feet, usable bay length, booth length, whether fiberglass leaves the property, and what goes into a supplement package. The answers will sort your options quickly.

    Bays built around a forty five foot vehicle

    This is a facility problem before it is a skill problem. A Class A coach with a raised roof needs door height that most collision shops do not have, bay length that most shops cannot clear, and turning room to get a forty five foot vehicle positioned without a fifteen point maneuver. A general body shop in south Orange County usually cannot take the vehicle in the door at all, and a dealership service drive is sized for the units it sells rather than the ones it does not. Ask any shop for its door height and usable bay length before you tow anything to it. The answer tells you most of what you need to know.

    A paint booth long enough to shoot a whole side

    Refinishing a coach in sections produces a coach that looks refinished in sections. A motorhome sidewall can run thirty five feet with no body line, no seam and a large radius that shows every transition edge under direct sun. Shooting that surface in one pass with consistent gun distance, consistent film build and controlled flash times is what makes a repair disappear. Booths sized for passenger vehicles force a shop to break the panel into segments and hope the joins fall somewhere nobody looks. Southern California sun does not cooperate with that hope, and the seam shows within a season.

    Actual experience with bonded sandwich construction

    A recreational vehicle sidewall is not sheet metal. It is an outer skin of fiberglass or filon, an adhesive layer, block foam or lauan core, aluminum tube framing and an interior finish panel, all bonded under pressure and getting its stiffness from the glue line the way a plywood beam does. Repairing it means knowing how to find bond failure by tap testing, how far past the visible dent the separation usually runs, when injection and vacuum clamping will hold and when the skin has to be cut and sectioned. A shop that has only worked steel unibody will treat the dent as the damage, because on their normal vehicle it is.

    Fiberglass and composite work performed on site

    Molded caps, fender skirts, compartment doors and radius corners are fiberglass, and fiberglass repair is a separate craft from metal collision work. Doing it in house means the crack mapping, tap testing, grinding, glass schedule, layup and fairing all happen where the vehicle is, on the shop's schedule. Sending composite work to a third party adds transport time on both ends to the part that is already the longest item in the repair, and it puts a hand off between the person who assessed the damage and the person fixing it. On a discontinued cap where replacement tooling no longer exists, in house repair is frequently the only path that finishes this year.

    Supplement documentation as a standing practice

    Most of the money recovered on a recreational vehicle claim comes from the supplement, and most supplements fail on their first review because they assert cost without attaching evidence. Every supplement line that leaves this shop references a numbered photograph showing the condition in place before removal, plus a one sentence construction reason for the operation. Measurements, moisture readings and part numbers are attached rather than described. That practice is boring, it is unglamorous, and it is the difference between a file that clears on first pass and a file that cycles three times while the vehicle sits in the yard accruing storage days.

    A frame rack rated for chassis weight

    Pulling a bent rail on a coach is not the same operation as pulling one on a sedan, because the mass involved is different by an order of magnitude and the anchoring points are different. Structural correction needs a rack rated for the load, a measuring system that references factory datum points and an operator willing to measure during the pull rather than only at the end. Straightening by eye on a vehicle this size produces something that looks correct and tracks wrong. Members that kinked rather than bent get cut out and replaced, because pulling yielded material back to shape only conceals that it has already failed.

    House systems and body work under one roof

    A collision on a coach is rarely just body damage. Impact opens seams that let water into a floor, moves corner posts that put a slide room out of square, tears wiring behind a panel and knocks an appliance off its mounts. A body shop that only does bodies hands the vehicle back with the skin repaired and the symptoms intact, and the owner then goes looking for an RV service center to chase the rest. Body, paint, fiberglass, mechanical and electrical, and interior all working from the same file means the slide gets squared before the seals are renewed, and the wall gets water tested before the interior finish goes back in.

    Pricing published before you are committed

    Labor rates, material formulas, parts markup, deposit thresholds and the card surcharge are all published rather than revealed at authorization. Body and paint labor runs $210 per hour, mechanical and electrical $260 per hour, diagnostic time $285 per hour with a one hour minimum credited against an authorized repair, and detail $95 per hour. Paint supplies calculate at $55 per paint hour and body supplies at $5 per body hour on every estimate. Insurance billed work may be invoiced at carrier negotiated rates that differ from posted retail, and where a gap exists between what a carrier funds and what a repair costs, you hear about it in writing before work starts rather than at pickup.

Where a specialist is the wrong answer

If the damage is a scuffed bumper cover on a Sprinter based van that a local shop can take in the door today, driving it up here is probably not worth your afternoon. If the problem is an engine or transmission overhaul, an emission test or a commercial vehicle safety inspection, this is not the facility for it and we will say so on the phone rather than after you arrive.

The case for a specialist gets stronger as the structure gets more involved: bonded sidewalls, molded caps, delamination, roof replacement, slide rooms out of square, frame correction and full repaints. That is where the building and the composite room change the outcome rather than the schedule.
