A coach is four utilities stacked into one vehicle. There is a direct current system that runs off a battery bank, an alternating current system that runs off a cord or a generator, a liquid propane system feeding three or four burners, and a water system that has to hold pressure while the whole assembly moves down the 241 at highway speed. Coaches are plugged into a metered shore pedestal, run on generator, load banked, and left connected long enough to reproduce intermittent behavior, which is not something that can be done in a driveway.

The other reason to bring systems work into a shop is that most of these faults are cross-system. Low house voltage makes an absorption refrigerator control board behave erratically. A leaking propane regulator diaphragm affects the furnace, the water heater and the cooktop at once. A generator that will not carry a second air conditioner may be reporting a fuel pickup issue, a governor adjustment, or simply a transfer switch that never handed the load over. Having every subsystem in front of you at the same time is what makes it possible to find the single cause behind three complaints.

Common questions

Why does an RV systems evaluation cost money when the repair might be simple?
Because the evaluation is the work. Isolating an intermittent 12-volt fault means load testing the bank, checking voltage drop across every junction in the feed, and often leaving the coach connected for hours to reproduce a symptom that shows up once a day. An RV systems evaluation covering slides, awnings, water, electrical or generator work is $150 at OCRV Center and it is credited against an authorized repair. In-depth diagnostic time runs one hour minimum at $285 per hour and is credited the same way, so the fee is effectively a deposit toward the fix.
My coach has three unrelated problems. Do I need three appointments?
Usually not, and there is a good chance they are not unrelated. Batteries that will not hold a charge, a furnace that short cycles and a refrigerator that runs warm on propane can all trace back to a single low voltage condition or a single propane supply problem. Bring the whole list in at once. We work the list in order of what could be causing the others, which frequently collapses three complaints into one repair and one labor setup instead of three.
Do you work on the chassis engine or the transmission?
No. OCRV Center does chassis, suspension, brakes, leveling and the entire house side of the coach. Engine internals and transmission internals are not part of what this facility performs, and a shop that tells you otherwise on an RV chassis is usually subcontracting it. What we do handle on the running side is suspension, air bags, ride height, brakes, wheel bearings, leveling systems and the electrical circuits that tie the chassis to the house.
Can systems work be done while I wait?
Small jobs can. A detector replacement, a faucet cartridge, a fuse block repair or a soft start install are same day items. Anything involving diagnosis of an intermittent fault, a cooling unit swap, a generator that has to be pulled on its slide, or a plumbing repair that requires opening a wall needs the coach for at least a day and often several. We tell you which category you are in before the vehicle is dropped, so the plan is set before you drive up from Lake Forest.
What information should I bring with me?
Model and serial numbers off the appliance data plates if you can reach them, the make and model of the coach, and a short written history of when the fault appears. Whether a symptom happens only on shore power, only on generator, only when the slide is out or only after four hours of driving narrows the search enormously. Photos of any error codes on a control board or an inverter display are extremely useful, since many faults clear themselves before the coach reaches the shop.
Is it worth upgrading an older coach to lithium and solar?
It depends on how you camp. If the coach lives on a shore pedestal, a lithium bank buys very little. If you spend nights away from power, a properly sized lithium bank with a matched charger, a shunt monitor and enough roof array to replace what you use overnight changes the experience completely. The honest answer requires knowing your daily amp hour consumption, which is exactly what a shunt install measures, and that number is the one that should drive the budget.
