Absorption refrigerators and the order they get tested in

A Dometic or Norcold absorption refrigerator has no compressor. It moves heat by boiling an ammonia and water solution in a sealed cooling unit, which means it needs a heat source, a level installation and adequate airflow across the coils. Diagnosis follows those three in order.

Heat source first. On propane the burner, orifice, thermocouple and igniter get checked along with supply pressure. On electric the heating element is measured for resistance and its supply verified. A unit that cools on one source and not the other has told you which half of the system to look at, and that is the single most useful piece of information an owner can bring in.

Airflow second. The rear compartment needs air entering low and leaving high, and if the upper vent is blocked or the factory baffle is missing the unit simply cannot reject heat. Adding a small circulation fan behind the coils is a legitimate and inexpensive improvement on units that struggle in July heat.

The cooling unit itself is last, because it is the expensive answer. Yellow residue at the rear, a sharp ammonia smell, or a boiler tube that shows heat scale means the sealed system has failed, and at that point the choice is a replacement cooling unit or a conversion to a compressor refrigerator. We put both options on paper with prices before anything is ordered.

Compressor, residential and twelve volt refrigerators

More coaches now leave the factory with compressor refrigeration, either a residential unit running off an inverter or a purpose built 12-volt unit from a manufacturer such as Furrion or Dometic. These behave like household appliances and are diagnosed like them, which is generally simpler.

The complaints that do arise are usually power related rather than refrigeration related. A residential unit on an inverter is sensitive to voltage sag and to modified sine output, and a compressor that hums and clicks off is frequently reporting a supply problem rather than a failed compressor. Measuring at the appliance during the start attempt separates the two immediately.

Conversion from absorption to compressor is a service in its own right, and it involves more than the appliance. Cabinet opening dimensions, the vent openings left behind, the inverter capacity, battery bank size and the mounting to restrain a heavier unit against road motion all have to be addressed. Done properly it is a substantial improvement in cooling performance and in tolerance of hot weather.

Cooktops, ovens and combustion quality

A burner should burn with a crisp blue cone. Yellow tipping, soot on cookware and a lazy flame indicate either low supply pressure or a partially blocked orifice, and both are cheap to correct once measured. This is another appliance where the manometer reading at the supply saves a great deal of time.

Oven complaints split between the thermostat and the safety valve. An oven that lights and then goes out has a thermocouple or flame sensor not proving the flame, while an oven that never holds temperature has a thermostat capillary that has failed or a valve that is not modulating. Baking performance is also affected by the position of the deflector plate, which is frequently missing on used coaches.

Ignition systems get their own attention. Piezo igniters wear out, spark modules fail, and electrode gaps drift out of specification. These are inexpensive parts and replacing them is far more sensible than living with a burner that requires a lighter every time.

Microwaves, convection units and their supply circuit

A microwave that runs but does not heat has a magnetron, a high voltage diode or a capacitor problem, and those are tested rather than guessed at because the high voltage side of a microwave holds a charge and is genuinely dangerous to probe carelessly. Whether the unit is worth repairing depends on the model and on parts availability, and for many coach microwaves replacement is the sensible call.

A microwave that trips a breaker on start is usually a supply issue rather than an appliance issue. Microwaves draw a large inrush, and on a coach running from a generator or an inverter that inrush can exceed what the source will deliver. Measuring supply voltage at the moment of start identifies whether the appliance or the source is at fault.

Convection and combination units add a heating element and a fan, and their failures follow ordinary oven logic. Mounting is worth checking on any over-range unit, because the trim kit and the retention brackets carry the weight over rough road and they loosen with time.

Washers, dryers and vented laundry in a coach

Coach laundry is either a combination washer and dryer in one drum or a stacked pair, and both are demanding on the systems around them. A combination unit uses a great deal of water and, in a vented configuration, needs a duct run that is short and correctly terminated to dry in a reasonable time.

The most common complaints are slow drying and failure to drain. Slow drying is nearly always the vent: a run that is too long, too many bends, a crushed section or a terminal flap that does not open. Failure to drain is a pump, a filter or a discharge line issue, and on a coach it can also be a gray tank that is full, which the machine has no way of knowing.

Installation work in this category is as common as repair. Adding laundry to a coach means confirming the cabinet can take the weight and the vibration, that the water supply and drain can be routed properly, that the electrical circuit is adequate, and that the gray tank capacity makes sense for how the coach is used.

Ventilation, fans and appliance exhaust

Powered roof vents move a surprising amount of air and they do more for comfort in an Orange County summer than owners expect. Failures are usually the lift mechanism, the rain sensor or the motor, and on older units the dome itself has become brittle from ultraviolet exposure and cracks along the hinge.

Range hood fans and bathroom fans get neglected because they are quiet failures. A range fan that is not moving air puts combustion products and moisture into the coach, and moisture is the beginning of every water damage story we see on the body side of the shop.

Every powered vent is also a roof penetration, so replacement work includes proper sealing of the flange and inspection of the surrounding membrane. We treat a vent replacement as a sealing job that happens to include a fan, not the other way around.

My refrigerator works on shore power but not on propane. Where do I start?
That symptom is genuinely useful because it means the cooling unit is intact. Heat is reaching the boiler on electric and producing cooling, so the sealed system works. The fault is on the gas side: supply pressure, the burner orifice, the igniter gap, the flame sensor or the gas valve. We measure propane working pressure first, then inspect the burner tube, which in this climate is frequently obstructed by an insect nest. It is usually an inexpensive repair, and it is the opposite of the expensive answer people fear.
Is a cooling unit replacement worth it, or should I convert to a compressor fridge?
Both are legitimate and the decision usually comes down to how the coach is used. A replacement cooling unit keeps the original cabinet, works on propane away from power, and is the simpler job. A compressor conversion cools better in hot weather, is less sensitive to being off level, and needs no propane, but it requires adequate inverter and battery capacity and some cabinet and vent work. We price both, including the supporting electrical work the conversion needs, so you are comparing complete numbers rather than appliance prices.
Does my refrigerator really need to be level?
Yes, and more than most owners realize. An absorption unit circulates its solution by gravity, so parking noticeably off level lets liquid pool in the boiler and, over time, can permanently damage the cooling unit. The tolerance is roughly a couple of degrees side to side while parked. Driving is fine because the motion keeps things moving. Compressor units do not have this limitation at all, which is one of the practical reasons owners who boondock on uneven ground consider converting.
Why does my microwave trip the breaker on the generator but not at home?
Inrush current. A microwave draws a large surge for a fraction of a second at start, and a generator that is already carrying an air conditioner may not have the headroom to supply it. The same applies to an inverter that is sized close to its running rating. The fix is usually load management rather than appliance repair, and sometimes a soft start device on the air conditioner to free up generator capacity. We measure the supply voltage at the moment of start to confirm which side is actually at fault.
Can you install a washer and dryer in a coach that did not come with one?
Often yes, if the coach was built with a laundry provision or has a closet that can be adapted. The evaluation covers structural support for the weight and the spin vibration, water supply and drain routing, an adequate electrical circuit, vent routing for a vented dryer, and whether the gray tank capacity suits the way you travel. Combination units avoid the vent question but use more water per cycle. We look at the specific coach before committing, because the answer varies more by floor plan than by brand.
