Truck Campers Repair For Lake Forest Owners
Truck campers are the densest recreational vehicle by weight per square foot, and every repair decision on them is a weight decision. A camper that gains two hundred pounds during a rebuild may push the truck past its payload rating, which is a real safety and legal problem rather than a theoretical one. That is why we build repairs with the same material family the manufacturer used rather than substituting heavier plywood for a foam cored panel because it is easier to work. Owners who load their camper onto a scale after a repair should find the number roughly where it started.
The molded fiberglass campers from builders like Northern Lite and Bigfoot are a distinct repair problem from the framed and laminated units. A one-piece shell has almost no joints to leak, which is the point of the design, but it also means damage is repaired by rebuilding laminate rather than by replacing a panel. Gelcoat matching on a molded shell is exacting because there are no body lines to hide a transition, and the repair area on a curved surface has to be faired accurately or it will read as a wave in reflected light.
Interior work in a truck camper is the tightest cabinetry we do. Everything is scribed to a curved wall, the dinette converts to a bed, the wet bath is a molded pan with almost no tolerance, and there is no space to work from behind anything. Replacing a water damaged floor in a slide-in camper generally means removing most of the furniture, and the labor is in the disassembly and reassembly rather than in the flooring. We say that up front, because the flooring material cost on a camper this size is a small fraction of the ticket.

What goes wrong on these
Jack mount failure that tears the wall rather than bending the bracket
Four jacks lift the entire loaded weight of a truck camper, and each one hangs off a bracket bolted through the sidewall to an internal backing plate. The load path is short and the leverage is enormous. When an owner loads or unloads on a slope, or lifts with one jack extended further than the others, the bracket does not bend. It pulls its backing plate through the wall structure and leaves a torn hole in a laminated panel that also happens to be a structural member. Repair means rebuilding the wall section and enlarging the backing plate, not simply rebolting the bracket to fresh material.
Cabover cantilever stress that opens the nose seam over years of loading
The bed area of a truck camper hangs over the truck cab with nothing beneath it, and it is where the heaviest single item in the camper sits. Every dip in the road puts a bending cycle into the joint where the overhang meets the main body. On aluminum framed campers the fasteners at that seam slowly elongate their holes, and the seam opens as a hairline that lets water into the framing. It presents as a damp mattress edge, which owners blame on condensation. The actual repair involves opening the seam, replacing degraded framing, and refastening on a larger pattern.
Truck bed geometry that damages the camper rather than the truck
Truck beds are not all the same width at the floor and at the rail, and bed liners change the dimension again. A camper loaded into a bed that pinches at the wheel wells will take a permanent compression mark in the lower sidewall, and one that sits on a ribbed liner without a full pad will crack the floor along the rib lines. Owners are surprised because nothing hit anything. We check the fit as part of any structural repair on a truck camper, because returning the camper to the same bed that damaged it means seeing it again.
Tie-down loading that transmits truck frame twist straight into the camper
Frame mounted tie-downs are the correct way to secure a truck camper, but they also connect the camper rigidly to a chassis that twists significantly off road. Turnbuckles cranked tight for a washboard road transfer that twist into a box that was never designed to accept it, and the result is cracked corner joints and a rear wall that separates from the floor. Spring loaded turnbuckles exist for exactly this reason. When we repair a corner separation on a camper used off pavement, we ask about the tie-down hardware, because the hardware is usually the cause.
