Aluminum, fiberglass and bonded sheet behave differently
The three common exterior constructions on recreational vehicles respond to damage in ways that have almost nothing in common, and using the wrong technique on one of them makes the damage worse rather than better.
Corrugated or smooth aluminum siding over stick framing is the traditional trailer construction. The skin spans between studs, it is thin, and it work hardens fast. A dent in aluminum can often be worked out where the metal has stretched only slightly, but aluminum that has creased has already thinned along the crease and will crack if it is straightened aggressively. On a corrugated panel, the corrugation itself is what carries the stiffness, and once a corrugation is flattened at a dent the panel has lost stiffness locally whether or not the surface can be made flat again.
Laminated fiberglass over foam and framing is the modern sandwich construction, and it does not dent in any meaningful sense. It either flexes and returns, or the bond releases, or the laminate cracks. So an impact that would leave a dent in aluminum leaves either nothing visible or a delaminated zone in a laminated wall, which is why the two constructions need completely different inspection approaches. Bonded Filon sheet sits between the two: thin enough to be damaged easily, laminated enough that it cannot be planished, and repaired almost exclusively by sectioning.

Dents, creases and low speed impact
Most body panel work on a coach is not collision work. It is the accumulated result of tight campsites, low branches, gas station canopies, fuel islands, backing into things and being backed into. The damage is shallow, it is usually on a corner or a lower panel, and it is entirely repairable if the underlying structure was not involved.
The judgment call on a dent is whether the metal has stretched. A dent that pushed the panel in without stretching it can be worked back with the panel returning to its original dimension. A dent that stretched the metal now has more material in that area than the panel has room for, and pushing it flat produces oil canning where the excess has to go somewhere. That is where shrinking techniques or a section replacement come in, and it is why an experienced technician spends longer looking at a dent than working on it.
The other consideration on any coach dent is what the panel is attached to. A dent over an open bay can be worked from behind if there is access. A dent over a bonded core cannot, because there is nowhere to get a tool and because pushing from the front has already crushed the foam behind the skin. Crushed foam does not recover, so that repair becomes a core question rather than a metal question, and treating it as a straightforward dent leaves a soft spot behind a flat panel.

Sidewall section replacement
When a panel is damaged past repair, replacing a section is usually better than replacing the whole wall, and the entire quality of that job comes down to where the seam lands. A seam in the middle of a flat expanse of sidewall will be visible in raking light forever regardless of how well it is finished. A seam that lands under a molding, at a body line, at a window edge or at a compartment opening disappears completely.
Planning the cut is therefore the first task and it frequently means removing more material than the damage strictly requires. Cutting back to the next natural break costs a little more in material and saves a great deal in finishing labor and in long term appearance. On laminated walls the cut also has to land where there is framing to bond and fasten to, since a seam floating over a foam bay has nothing to hold it.
The new section is bonded and mechanically fastened the way the factory built it, with backing behind the joint where the construction calls for it. Seam sealing goes on before any primer, because a seam sealed after refinish is a seam that will telegraph. Then the area is faired, primed, blocked and refinished with the blend running out into the surrounding panels. On a large side, refinishing the full panel between natural breaks often looks better than a tight blend, and that is a conversation worth having before the color goes on rather than after.

Compartment doors, skirts and lower body panels
Compartment and baggage doors take more abuse than any other panel on a coach and they fail in predictable places. The corners crack because that is where the stress concentrates when the door is flexed by a latch that is out of adjustment. The hinge edge distorts because a door that has been leaned on or loaded has hinged on its own skin. The seal groove fills with debris and the door stops sealing, which is how a wet basement compartment starts.
On a motorhome with pass through storage, those doors are also large and often frameless laminated panels, which means a crack in one is a laminate repair rather than a sheet metal repair. Replacement doors are available for many models and are often the better answer on a badly cracked panel, since a large repaired door still flexes at the same rate and tends to crack again nearby.
Skirts, fender fairings and lower body panels are the sacrificial layer. They get hit by road debris, dragged on driveway transitions and curbs, and stressed by the flex of a long body over uneven ground. Most of this is straightforward repair or replacement work, and the useful thing to check while it is apart is what the damage did to the mounting. A skirt that tore loose usually took its mounting flange or a set of rivet holes with it, and reattaching it to the same failed holes just repeats the failure.

Corner moldings, seams and the reseal that follows
Moldings on a recreational vehicle are not decoration. The vertical corner molding, the roof edge molding, the belt line and the transitions around windows and doors all cover a seam where two panels meet, and the sealant under that molding is the actual weather barrier. The molding holds it in place and protects it from ultraviolet exposure.
That means any body panel work at or near a seam is a resealing job as well as a panel job. Pulling a molding to make a repair and reinstalling it over the original sealant is a very common shortcut and a very reliable way to create a leak, because the old sealant has taken a set to the original position and will not reseat. The correct sequence is to remove the molding, remove all the old sealant, clean and prepare both surfaces, apply new sealant, and refit the molding with new fasteners into sound material.
Screws and rivets along a molding line deserve their own attention. Fastener holes in aluminum and in laminate both elongate over time as the body flexes, and a fastener in an elongated hole no longer clamps. That is why moldings start lifting at one end and work along their length. Repair means addressing the hole rather than driving a larger screw into it, which typically means a backing plate, a bonded insert or relocating the fastener to sound material.

Awning rails, ladders and everything bolted through the wall
Every accessory bolted to the outside of a coach is a hole through the weather barrier and a point load into a wall that was designed for distributed loads. Awning rails, ladders, spare tire carriers, bike racks, satellite mounts, grab handles and marker lights all sit on that boundary, and they are a disproportionate share of both leaks and localized structural damage.
The failure mode is usually progressive. The fastener works slightly in its hole under vibration. The hole elongates. Water gets in around the loosened fastener. The substrate softens. The fastener loses more grip. Eventually the accessory moves visibly, and by then the wall around it has been wet for a long time. An awning rail that has started to sag is the classic example, and it is almost never just a matter of driving the screws back in.
Doing it properly means removing the accessory, assessing the substrate behind it, repairing or replacing softened core and adding backing where the original design did not provide enough, then remounting into sound material with correct sealant. Where an owner is adding a new accessory, the same logic applies in advance: put backing in the wall, seal the penetration properly, and the mount will outlast the vehicle. Lake Forest owners who tow bikes or carry a spare on the rear cap should treat those mounts as an annual inspection item rather than a fit and forget installation.
How the work runs

Identify the construction
Before anything is planned, we establish what the panel actually is: aluminum sheet over stick framing, laminated fiberglass sandwich, bonded Filon over foam, or molded composite. Each one has a different repair path and a different limit.

Assess what is behind it
The area is sounded and probed for bond loss, moisture and framing damage. A dent in a skin that is bonded to a core is a different repair from a dent in a skin that spans an open bay, and the same tool would ruin one of them.

Repair or section
Aluminum is worked back where the metal will take it. Laminate is scarfed and rebuilt or the section is replaced. Where the panel is bonded sheet, the affected section is cut at a natural seam and replaced rather than reworked.

Fasten, bond and seal
New panel material is bonded and mechanically fastened using the method the vehicle was built with, seams are backed where required, and every joint and penetration is sealed with material appropriate to the substrate.

Refinish and reset trim
The repair is primed, blocked and refinished with a blend into adjacent panels, then moldings, trim, lights and hardware are refitted with fresh sealant rather than reused gaskets that have taken a set.
