How coach cabinets are actually hung
Open a cabinet in almost any production coach and the anatomy is consistent. The box is thin lauan or a light panel product, stapled and glued at the corners, with a hardwood or hardwood veneered face frame on the front carrying the door hinges. Overheads are screwed up into the ceiling framing and back into whatever wall studs land behind them. Base cabinets are fastened to the floor deck and to the wall. Nothing here is carrying roof load. The cabinet exists to hold contents and to look like furniture, and it is built as light as it can be for exactly the reason everything in an RV is built light.
Stud spacing is nominally sixteen inches but it is not reliable. Studs shift around window openings, vent penetrations, slide framing and wiring chases, and on a laminated wall the framing was set by whatever the lamination fixture required. That is why a cabinet that has come loose was often only ever caught by two screws instead of four, and why the fix is not simply longer screws in the same holes. We find the actual framing, add blocking where it is missing, and refasten into wood rather than into a panel.
The failure mode is almost never load. It is cycling. Every mile puts a small torsional input into the box, and a stapled joint that flexes a hundred thousand times works loose. That is why cabinets fail in the same places on the same models: the corner staples let go, the face frame racks, the door reveal goes uneven, and the whole assembly starts to move against the wall. Repair means re-squaring the box, adding mechanical fasteners and adhesive at the joints, and reattaching to real framing so the cycle stops rather than restarting.

Refacing against replacement, and when each is right
Refacing keeps the boxes and changes everything you see. New doors and drawer fronts in the profile and finish you want, new veneer or rigid laminate over the exposed face frame stiles and rails, new hinges and hardware. In a coach this is a disproportionately good value because the boxes are the part that is hardest to remove and the part nobody looks at. A refaced galley reads as an entirely new kitchen from the doorway, and it does not require pulling a countertop or disturbing the wall behind.
Replacement is the answer when the boxes themselves are compromised. Water damage at a base cabinet under a sink, a box that has racked so far the door cannot be adjusted square, panel delamination that has swollen the material, or a layout change that eliminates or moves the cabinet. Replacement is also correct when the existing boxes are so far out of consistent dimension that new doors cannot be hung with an even reveal, which happens on older coaches where the original boxes were built to loose tolerances.
There is a middle path worth knowing about. On a run where two boxes are sound and one is destroyed, we can build a replacement box to the original outside dimension, tie it into the existing face frame with a scarfed stile, and reface the entire run so it reads as one assembly. That is more finish carpentry than either pure option, but it costs far less than replacing a full wall of cabinetry and it avoids disturbing the countertop and the wall.

Painting and refinishing factory cabinet finishes
Painting RV cabinets is the most requested interior job and the one most often done badly by people who treat it like a kitchen. Factory coach cabinetry is usually finished in a catalyzed conversion varnish, which is a hard, chemically cured film that nothing sticks to without preparation. The correct process is a thorough degrease, a mechanical scuff of the entire surface, a bonding primer, and a topcoat that cures hard enough to resist the fingernail and the fifty pound bag of gear that slides into it. A wall paint over a light sanding will chip at the first door edge contact.
Thermofoil doors are the exception that has to be called out. A thermofoil door is a substrate wrapped in a vinyl film that is heat formed over the edges. It cannot be reliably painted, because the film continues to move with temperature and the paint does not, and because a coach interior in a Southern California summer can exceed one hundred thirty degrees with the windows closed. Thermofoil that has already started to release at a corner is telling you the adhesive is done. Those doors get replaced, not refinished.
Where the existing finish is sound and you only want to change the tone, a toner or glaze over a scuffed original can shift the color without a full opaque coat, which keeps the grain visible and uses far less material. Where the cabinet is real veneer that has sun bleached along a window run, stripping and refinishing the affected doors and blending into the run is often better than painting everything, because the wood is genuinely the nicer material.

Doors, drawers and the hardware that has to survive transit
A house cabinet only has to stay closed against gravity. A coach cabinet has to stay closed against a hard brake on the 5 and a lateral input coming off a transition. That is why RV cabinet hardware includes positive catches: magnetic touch latches, roller catches, push to open mechanisms with a detent, or on drawers a slide with a self locking over travel position. Replacing them with ordinary soft close hardware and nothing else is how a galley ends up on the floor at the first hard stop.
Soft close is entirely compatible with transit security, it just has to be paired correctly. We fit European style concealed hinges with soft close and add a mechanical catch where the door is large or heavy. On drawers we use full extension slides with a locking detent, or fit a positive latch at the front. On pantry pull outs and anything tall, an additional latch near the top prevents the door from flexing open at the unlatched end.
Hinge adjustment is the last five percent that makes a cabinet look built rather than assembled. Concealed hinges adjust in three axes, and getting an even reveal across a run of five doors on a coach whose walls are not plumb takes patience. Every door and drawer gets set before the coach leaves, and the whole run is checked with the coach off the jacks so the doors are aligned in the position they will actually sit in when parked.

Countertop materials and what each one costs you
Factory countertops in most coaches are postform laminate over particleboard, or a thin solid surface on higher trim levels. Both fail predictably. Laminate lifts at the sink cutout and the front edge because the substrate absorbed water through the seam. Solid surface cracks at the narrow web between a sink cutout and the front edge, which is a stress point that flexes when the coach twists. Neither failure is a defect exactly. They are the consequence of a rigid surface bonded to a structure that moves.
Acrylic solid surface is our usual recommendation for a coach. It is lighter than stone, it can be seamed invisibly so a galley top and a slide extension read as one piece, it takes an integral sink, it tolerates flex better than quartz, and when it does get damaged it is repairable in place by sanding rather than replaceable only. Quartz and granite are available and they look superb, but they are heavy, they are brittle at the cutout web, and once a slab is set the weight is permanently spent from your cargo capacity.
Laminate remains a legitimate choice and it has improved enormously. Modern high pressure laminates over a moisture resistant substrate with a properly sealed cutout will outlast the factory original by a wide margin at the lowest weight and cost of any option. Butcher block is beautiful and moves with humidity, so it needs a finish schedule and it needs to be fastened in a way that allows movement. Wherever a top crosses a slide seam, we detail the joint so the two pieces can move independently rather than fighting each other.

Custom builds: pantries, desks and filler cabinetry
A large share of cabinet work is not repair at all. It is building something the factory did not: a slide out pantry in the dead space beside the refrigerator, a desk and file drawer where a bunk stack used to be, a pet feeding station in a toe kick, a proper wardrobe interior with adjustable rods and drawers instead of a single hanging bar, or filler cabinetry to close off an awkward gap left by a layout change.
Custom work in a coach is built to the coach rather than to a standard. We template the actual opening because it will not be square, we build the carcase to hit the real dimensions, and we scribe the finished piece to the wall and floor contours. Fastening is planned to the framing we can actually find, with fabricated backing added where nothing useful lands. Weight is specified deliberately: light panel products with hardwood edging give the look of solid stock at a fraction of the mass.
The two things we design in from the start are transit security and access to what is behind. Every custom piece gets positive latching, and anything that covers a plumbing connection, a wiring junction, a slide motor or a service point gets a removable panel rather than being permanently closed in. That second rule saves an enormous amount of money the first time something behind the cabinet needs attention.

Water damaged cabinet bases and what has to come out
The base cabinet under a galley sink or a bath vanity is the most common water casualty in a coach, and it is usually a slow supply fitting or a drain slip joint rather than a dramatic leak. Panel products swell irreversibly. A swollen box does not dry back to dimension, the face frame joints have already opened, and the fasteners have lost their grip in the softened material. Drying it out and painting over it buys a season at best.
The scope question is how far it went. Water that stayed in the cabinet is a cabinet job. Water that ran out the bottom and into the floor deck is a subfloor job with a cabinet on top of it, and that distinction has to be settled with a meter before pricing. We pull the toe kick and read the deck, and if the deck is wet the cabinet comes out entirely so the floor can be repaired properly rather than patched around.
Rebuilding gives an opportunity worth taking. A replacement base cabinet in a wet location can be built with a moisture resistant substrate, a sealed and coated interior floor, and a removable panel under the plumbing so the next leak shows itself and drains rather than soaking into the structure. That detail costs very little at build time and it is the difference between a nuisance and a repeat repair.

Condition survey
Every cabinet is opened, checked for square, tested for movement against the wall, and probed at the base for moisture. Doors and drawers are cycled to find worn hardware. We photograph the existing finish and identify whether it is conversion varnish, veneer, thermofoil or paint, because that decides what is possible.

Scope and samples
You see physical door samples, finish drawdowns and countertop chips in the coach itself, under its own lighting. Reface, refinish, rebuild or replace is decided cabinet by cabinet rather than as one blanket decision, and the estimate lines up with those choices.

Structural correction
Before anything cosmetic, loose boxes are re-squared, joints are reglued and mechanically fastened, blocking is added where framing is missing, and any water damaged substrate is removed. A finish applied over a moving box will fail at the joint no matter how good the finish is.

Finish and fit
Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed off the coach on racks for an even film. Face frames are veneered or coated in place with the surrounding surfaces masked. Countertops are templated, fabricated, seamed and set with the cutouts detailed to resist water at the sink.

Hardware and adjustment
Hinges, slides, catches and pulls are installed and every door is adjusted for an even reveal with the coach sitting off its jacks. Transit latching is verified by hand on every opening, including the pantry and any tall door that can flex.
