Two wall systems, two completely different repair paths
A laminated sidewall is a vacuum bonded sandwich. From outside in: gelcoat fiberglass or filon, then a thin lauan or composite skin, then block foam insulation with an aluminum or wood frame let into it, then the interior decorative panel. All of those layers are bonded into one structural member. The interior panel is not a covering over the wall. It is a face of the wall, and it contributes to the panel's stiffness. Cutting into it, or replacing a section of it, changes how the wall behaves and has to be done with that in mind.
A stick and tin wall is conventional framing: wood or aluminum studs, batt or block insulation between them, thin interior paneling stapled to the studs, and corrugated aluminum on the outside. Here the interior panel really is a covering, it can be removed and replaced without touching the structure, and the studs behind it are individually accessible. This is the easier of the two to repair and it is what you will find on most older trailers and on many entry level units still built today.
Telling them apart is straightforward. Look at the exterior: smooth fiberglass usually means laminated, corrugated aluminum usually means stick built. Tap the interior wall: a laminated wall sounds dense and consistent, a stick built wall changes tone between the studs and the bays. The distinction decides everything downstream, because on a laminated wall a bowed or bubbled interior panel is very often the visible end of a delamination problem rather than a panel problem, and treating it as a surface issue misses the actual failure.

Wallboard, printed film and why the seams show
The decorative surface in most coaches is a printed vinyl film laminated to a thin lauan or composite panel. It is inexpensive, light, and it comes in a pattern that changes every model year, which is why matching an older coach exactly is often impossible. The film is what fails first: it releases at a seam, bubbles where moisture got behind it, chalks and fades in a window run, or takes a permanent crease at a corner. The panel underneath is frequently still fine.
Panel joints are covered with a batten or trim strip rather than being taped and finished, because a taped joint would crack the first time the coach twisted. That trim is doing real work and its shrinkage over time is what produces the open gaps owners notice. On a repair we either reuse the original trim where it is sound, or replace the run so the profile and finish are consistent rather than mixing old and new pieces along one wall.
For replacement we have three routes depending on the goal. Match the existing panel as closely as the market allows and confine the change to one visually contained wall so the transition falls at a corner. Recover the existing panels in a new material such as a commercial grade vinyl wallcovering, a thin painted panel or a rigid laminate, which changes the whole room and removes the matching problem entirely. Or, on a room being remodeled anyway, replace the panels outright in a specified product. The second option is the one owners choose most often once they see how much better a whole room reads than a patched wall.

Ceiling panels and the roof bow spacing behind them
The ceiling in most towables and Class C coaches is a thin panel with a vinyl face, stapled or bonded to the roof bows, with the insulation and the roof deck above it. In a laminated roof the ceiling board is bonded into the sandwich the same way the wall skin is. Either way, the panel is spanning between bows and it is only as flat as those bows are, which is why a sagging ceiling is nearly always a bow problem or a bond problem rather than a panel that has simply gone limp.
Ceiling work is also where you meet everything that lives in the roof cavity: the air conditioner ducting, the vent fan boxes, the wire runs for ceiling lights and speakers, the LP and smoke detector wiring, and on newer coaches the antenna and solar cabling. All of that has to be located before a panel is cut and reinstated correctly afterward. On a full ceiling replacement we take the opportunity to correct wiring that was routed carelessly at the factory, because it will be another decade before anyone can reach it again.
A stained ceiling is a water finding, not a cosmetic one. The stain marks where water arrived, not where it came in, and on a roof the arrival point is usually a low point in the cavity well downstream of the actual penetration. Replacing the panel without tracing the source produces a clean ceiling that stains again after the first real rain. We trace the leak, repair it, dry the cavity to a verified reading, replace wet insulation, and only then fit new panel.

Headliners and wall panels in camper vans and Sprinters
A van has no framing to staple to. The roof and walls are ribbed steel with compound curves, and the factory or converter headliner is a formed panel or an upholstered board attached to the ribs with clips, studs or bonded fasteners. When a headliner drops it is usually the adhesive between the foam backing and the board that has released, which happens quickly in a vehicle that gets as hot inside as a van does parked in the sun in Orange County.
Recovering a headliner board properly means stripping the old foam completely rather than gluing new material over the crumbled remains, because the failed foam is the release layer. The board itself is often warped or torn at the fastener points and needs repair or replacement. New material is bonded with an adhesive rated for the temperature the vehicle actually reaches, and the panel is refitted with the wiring for lights, speakers and any roof mounted accessory reconnected as it goes.
Wall panels in a conversion are a design decision more than a repair. Anything fastened to the van's ribs has to be attached without creating a thermal bridge, because every uninsulated metal fastener that passes from a warm interior to a cold skin becomes a condensation point and that condensation ends up in the insulation. We use backing plates and thermal breaks at fastening points, specify insulation appropriate to the cavity depth, and detail the panel edges so they follow the van's curves rather than fighting them.

Water stained, bowed and delaminated panels
A bowed interior wall panel on a laminated coach is the inside face of a delamination. Water reached the bond line, the adhesive released, and the panel is no longer tied to the foam core behind it, so it deflects under its own weight and any load. You can sometimes see it in raking light as a broad shallow wave rather than a sharp bubble. The same failure appears from outside as a bulge or a soft area in the fiberglass, and the two are the same event seen from opposite sides.
That distinction changes the repair completely. A surface panel replacement fixes appearance and leaves a wall with reduced stiffness. The structural repair is a resin injection into the failed bond line with vacuum or mechanical clamping to draw the layers back together while it cures, or on a badly affected wall a section replacement of the laminate. Which one is appropriate depends on how much area has released and whether the core itself is still sound, and that is determined by mapping the affected area rather than estimating it from the visible bulge.
Water stained panels that are not delaminated are simpler but still need the source found. We read the surrounding structure with a meter, trace back to the entry point, repair it, dry the cavity, replace insulation that got wet, and then fit new panel. Insulation is replaced rather than dried because wet fiberglass batt compacts and does not recover its loft, and wet block foam holds water at the skin interface indefinitely.

What we do behind the panel while it is open
Opening a wall or a ceiling is expensive and it is not something to repeat. Whenever a panel is off, we treat the cavity as an opportunity. Insulation is upgraded where the original was thin or has settled. Wiring that was stapled tight against a sharp edge or run without a grommet through a metal member gets corrected. Circuits that a future owner will want, such as a run for a wall mounted television, a solar cable chase or a 12V outlet, are pulled while the wall is open even if nothing is connected yet.
Sound and thermal work belongs here too. A coach parked in Southern California heat benefits far more from insulation and a radiant barrier detail in the walls and ceiling than from anything you can do afterward, and the labor is essentially already paid for while the panel is off. In a van conversion the same access is when the thermal breaks at fastening points get done properly, which is the difference between a comfortable vehicle and one that drips condensation onto the bed.
Everything that is closed back in gets documented. We photograph the open cavity showing wire routing, insulation and any structural repair before the panel goes on, and those photographs go with the job file. The next time someone needs to know what is behind that wall, whether that is us or another shop or a buyer's inspector, the answer exists.
