Recover or replace, and how to tell which you need

Recovering keeps the frame, the mechanism and the geometry and changes the fabric and usually the foam. It is the right call when the underlying piece is sound: the frame is solid, the springs or webbing still have tension, a sleeper mechanism still folds and latches, and the shape of the piece still suits how you use the coach. Recovering a dinette set and a sofa transforms a room for a fraction of what new furniture costs, and it lets you use a material specified for a vehicle rather than whatever a furniture catalog offers.

Replacement makes sense when the frame is broken or racked, when a mechanism is worn past adjustment and parts are no longer produced, when the piece is the wrong size for the space, or when you want a function the existing piece does not have. The common example is replacing a jackknife sofa with theater seating, which changes the depth requirement, the power requirement and the anchoring, and is therefore a furniture and electrical job rather than an upholstery one.

There is a hybrid we use often on dinettes. The bases are rebuilt or reskinned, the frame is re-squared and refastened to the floor, and new cushions are built to the same dimensions in new foam and fabric. That gives a piece that looks and behaves like new for less than a full replacement, and it avoids the fitment problem that comes with trying to put a differently shaped aftermarket dinette into an opening that was built around the original.

Foam, springs and the dinette that has to become a bed

Foam is specified by density and by firmness, and the two are independent. Density is how much material is in a given volume and it determines how long the foam holds its shape. Firmness is how much it resists compression. Cheap replacement cushions are often low density and high firmness, which feels supportive on day one and collapses within a season. We specify high resilience foam in a density that suits how the piece is used, and on seating that doubles as a bed we build a layered core so the same cushion can be supportive to sit on and reasonable to sleep on.

Support under the foam matters as much as the foam. Coach seating uses sinuous springs, webbing, or on many dinettes a simple plywood platform. Springs lose tension and webbing stretches, and a new cushion set on a tired support system will feel wrong no matter how good the foam is. We check and restore the support before building cushions, which frequently means new webbing on a sofa frame or additional support under a platform that has begun to bow.

Dinette cushions have a specific problem worth calling out. They have to be thick enough to be comfortable as a bed and thin enough that the table drops flush to make that bed. That geometry is fixed by the table hardware and the seat back height. Adding an inch of foam for comfort can leave the converted bed sitting proud of the seat backs, which is worse to sleep on than the thinner cushion was. We measure the drop and build to it, and where more comfort is wanted we solve it with a topper rather than by changing the cushion thickness.

Fabric selection for a coach that bakes

Interior soft goods in a recreational vehicle have to meet a horizontal burn rate standard for flame spread. That is not optional and it is not a detail to leave to a fabric store. We source materials that carry the appropriate rating for vehicle interiors, and that alone rules out a large share of the residential upholstery market. It is the single most important reason to have coach seating done by a shop that works on vehicles.

After that, the driver is ultraviolet exposure and heat. A coach interior sees direct sun through large windows and reaches temperatures no living room ever does. Automotive and marine grade vinyls with ultraviolet inhibitors hold up extremely well, clean easily, and are the practical choice for a dinette and anywhere food is involved. Solution dyed acrylics and performance polyesters resist fading far better than ordinary upholstery cloth. Untreated natural fibers fade unevenly, which is why so many coaches show one shade on the window side of a sofa and another on the aisle side.

Leather is a legitimate choice on a coach that is used regularly and stored under cover, and a poor one on a coach that sits outdoors in the Orange County sun for months. It dries, it hardens and it cracks at the bolsters. Where an owner wants the look with the durability, we use a high grade automotive vinyl with a leather texture, or leather on the contact surfaces with vinyl on the sides and back, which is exactly how automotive seating has been built for decades.

Theater seats, recliners and slide room clearance

Powered theater seating is the most requested furniture upgrade and it has three constraints people discover after ordering. The first is depth. A recliner needs clearance behind it to recline and clearance in front to extend, and in a slide room it needs that clearance with the room in the extended position while still fitting inside the room's footprint when it retracts. We measure both positions before specifying, because a seat that fits beautifully with the slide out and fouls the doorway when the room comes in is a very expensive mistake.

The second is power. Powered recline, heat and lumbar all draw current, and that current has to come from somewhere. That means a properly sized 12V circuit with the right conductor gauge for the run length and a fuse at the distribution panel, or a 120V circuit if the seats are line powered, which then raises the question of whether they work on inverter. We run and protect the circuit as part of the installation rather than tapping something convenient nearby.

The third is anchoring, and it is the one that matters most. Coach floors have blocking in specific places that correspond to what the factory installed. Put a heavy powered seat somewhere the factory did not, and lag screws go into a thin deck skin with foam behind it. We locate the actual structure, add blocking where it is missing, and fasten into wood or through the deck with backing plates so the seat is genuinely attached to the vehicle rather than to a panel.

Anchoring furniture to a floor that was not built for it

Anything in a coach that is heavy and unrestrained is a projectile in a hard stop. Factory furniture is anchored to blocking that was installed in the deck during the build, which is why the layout you have is where the blocking is. Change the layout and the anchoring has to be rebuilt, not improvised. That is the fundamental rule behind every furniture placement decision we make.

Belted seating is a separate category with its own requirements. Where a dinette or a sofa carries seat belts, those belts are anchored to structure, not to the seat base or to the cushion frame, and any work that disturbs a belted seating position has to reinstate that anchoring exactly. We will not relocate a belted position onto improvised backing, and where an owner wants a belted seat somewhere new, that becomes a fabrication conversation about adding proper structure rather than an upholstery conversation.

The same logic applies to bed platforms, wardrobe carcases, entertainment centers and anything wall hung. Wall mounted televisions in particular get mounted into blocking or into a fabricated backer that spreads the load across multiple framing members, because the arm's leverage under road input is far higher than in a house. If we are opening a wall for panel work anyway, that is the moment the backing goes in.

Cab seats, curtains, valances and the finishing details

On a Class A or Class C, the cab seats are usually the most worn surfaces in the vehicle and they are frequently the last thing anybody addresses. Recovering captain chairs to match new house seating pulls the whole interior together and it is straightforward work: the seats come out, get stripped, get new foam where the bolsters have collapsed, and get recovered in a material that coordinates with the coach rather than the chassis manufacturer's original.

Window treatments are where an interior either resolves or does not. Factory valances are typically fabric wrapped boards screwed to the wall above each window, and they date a coach faster than anything else. Recovering them in the new fabric is inexpensive and high impact. Day and night shades that have failed at the cords or lost their tension can be restrung or replaced, and roller shades or a track system are alternatives that suit a more current look. Whatever is chosen has to clear the slide rooms when they move.

The small pieces matter to the finished result: cushion welting and piping that either matches or deliberately contrasts, throw pillows built from the same yardage, headboard panels, bunk mattress covers, and pet friendly fabric on the piece the dog actually uses. We plan yardage across all of it at once so the dye lot is consistent, because two pieces cut from different lots of the same pattern will read as slightly different colors under coach lighting.

How the work runs

    Piece by piece survey

    Every seating piece is checked for frame integrity, support tension, foam condition and mechanism function. We note which pieces are worth recovering and which are past it, and we measure the openings so any replacement can actually be fitted into the space it has to occupy.

  2. 02

    Material selection

    You review physical samples in the coach under its own lighting. Every candidate carries the appropriate flame spread rating for a vehicle interior. Yardage is calculated across all pieces at once so everything comes from one dye lot, and foam is specified by density and firmness for each application.

  3. 03

    Strip and rebuild

    Pieces are stripped to the frame. Racked frames are re-squared and reglued, webbing and springs are replaced or retensioned, and mechanisms are cleaned, lubricated and adjusted. Anything that will be hidden by the new cover is corrected while it is accessible.

  4. 04

    Cut, sew and fit

    Patterns are taken from the original covers or from the rebuilt frame, cut, sewn and fitted. Welting, zippers and closures are built in as specified. Cushions are stuffed and the fit is checked in the coach rather than on a bench, because the opening is the real reference.

    Install and anchor

    Pieces go back with anchoring into real blocking, with new backing fabricated where the factory did not put any. Powered seating gets its circuit run, fused and load tested. Every piece is checked for movement by hand before the coach is released.

Can I use regular furniture fabric in my RV?
No, and this is one place where the rule is not negotiable. It is a popular change and it works well, provided three things are checked first. Power: powered recline, heat and lumbar draw current that needs a properly sized and fused circuit, not a convenient tap. Anchoring: coach floors have blocking where the factory put furniture, so a heavy seat in a new location needs blocking added. We measure and quote all three before ordering seats.
Why did my new cushions go flat so quickly?
Almost always because the foam was low density. Density and firmness are independent properties, and inexpensive replacement cushions are frequently built from low density foam that feels firm on the first day and collapses within a season. We specify high resilience foam by density for the way each piece is used, and on cushions that double as a sleeping surface we build a layered core. The other common cause is a tired support system underneath, since new foam on stretched webbing or sagging springs will never feel right regardless of how good the foam is.
Can you recover just one piece, or does it all have to match?
We can do one piece, but consider the sun before you decide. Everything currently in the coach has faded to some degree, and it has faded unevenly depending on how much window exposure each piece gets. A new cover in the original pattern will read noticeably brighter next to a ten year old one. If the budget only covers one piece now, the better plan is often to recover the most worn item in a coordinating rather than matching material, then bring the rest to it later. When we do a whole set we cut all of it from one dye lot for exactly this reason.
Do you do cab seats and window treatments too?
Yes, and on a motorhome they make more difference than people expect. Cab captain chairs are usually the most worn surfaces in the whole vehicle and they get overlooked because they read as part of the chassis. Recovering them in a material that coordinates with the house area ties the coach together. Valances, shades and curtains are the other high impact item, since fabric wrapped valance boards date an interior faster than anything else. Anything we fit has to clear the slide rooms in both positions, which we check before it is installed.
