Hail, Wind And Falling Object Claims On A Large Vehicle

Counting hail is a measurement, not an impression
Hail damage on a large vehicle is invisible in flat daylight and obvious under a light source held at a low angle across the panel. That is not a trick, it is how you see shallow deformation in a large flat surface, and it is the only honest way to assess it. Dents get counted per panel and the density recorded, because density is what decides whether a panel is worked or replaced.
The threshold is not a fixed number. It depends on the substrate. Aluminum skin over tube framing can be worked to a point and then it work hardens and starts to oil can. Fiberglass and filon over a bonded core dent differently and frequently hide bond damage under a shallow impression. Molded caps can craze without denting at all. A count without a note about what the panel is made of is not much use.
We photograph each panel under the raking light with the count noted, so the estimate has a record behind it. That documentation matters more on hail than on almost any other loss type, because the damage genuinely does not photograph under normal conditions and an adjuster reviewing standard images will see a clean vehicle.

The roof is where the claim gets decided
Owners look at the sides. The claim is decided on the roof, because a membrane puncture is the entry point for the damage that costs real money. A hail claim funded as a skin and membrane job on a roof that has already let water into decking is a claim that gets repaired twice, and the second time it is a decking, truss and floor job.
So every storm claim here starts with a moisture grid across the roof, the ceiling and any seam near a puncture. Readings are recorded with locations and values rather than described as wet or dry. The gradient is the useful part. Elevated readings that fall off within a few feet of a puncture point to recent entry through that hole. Elevated readings spread evenly across a whole roof point to something that was happening long before the storm.
That distinction is the difference between a covered loss and a wear exclusion, and it is the single most common place a storm claim gets denied in part. It cannot be argued after the fact without data, which is why the grid gets taken on day one before anyone has an opinion to defend.

Wind damage runs through awnings and roof edges
Wind losses on a recreational vehicle concentrate in two places. Awnings, which are large sails attached to a wall with fasteners that were sized for a rolled up awning rather than a deployed one in a gust. And roof edges, where the membrane termination and the corner molding are the leading edge of a very large flat surface.
An awning that departs in a gust rarely goes quietly. It commonly takes an arm mount, a section of skin and sometimes a piece of the wall backing with it. The repair question is what the new arm gets mounted into, because remounting into the same skin and core that already failed produces a repeat performance the next windy afternoon. Rebuilding solid backing behind the mount is the correct answer and it needs to be on the estimate as its own operation.
Roof edge damage is quieter and worse. A membrane termination that lifted in wind can look nearly normal from the ground and be actively channeling water into the wall cavity every time it rains. Anyone who was parked in a wind event should have the roof edge and terminations inspected regardless of whether anything visible happened.

Falling objects, branches and campground incidents
A branch strike is the most under assessed loss type we see. The visible damage is a torn membrane and maybe a bent roof rail, and it looks like a small repair. What actually happens is that energy travels down the corner post, and on many floorplans that corner post frames a slide opening. The slide starts binding two weeks later and the owner reports it as an unrelated problem.
The tell is always in the operating components. A slide that hesitates, a compartment latch that needs a lift, an entry door that has started to drag. Those symptoms mean an opening moved, and openings do not move from a torn membrane. If any of them changed after a strike, the assessment needs to include measuring the openings rather than just patching the roof.
Report the incident when it happens rather than when the symptom appears, because a claim filed two weeks after the fact for a problem that seems unrelated is a claim that starts with a question mark. The strike and the binding slide are the same event, and the file reads much better when both are in it from the beginning.

Two events, one visit, and why the separation matters
Storm damage on a trip and a curb scrape at a campground the following week are two losses. Owners report them together because they are bringing the vehicle in once, and carriers frequently process them as one comprehensive claim. Depending on the policy that can change the deductible treatment, and it can lead to storm damage being partially attributed to the impact event.
Hail has a distinctive pattern and distribution that a gate post does not, and the two are trivially separable to anyone who looks. We document each event as its own damage set with its own photographs, its own locations on the vehicle and its own mechanism, and we make the separation explicit in the submission.
That takes an extra hour at intake and it protects the owner regardless of how the deductible question resolves. It also keeps the file credible, which matters on every other line in the estimate.

What storm repair costs and how long it runs
Hail damage repair on a recreational vehicle runs from roughly fifteen hundred dollars into the twenty thousand dollar range and up, typically ten to ninety hours of labor depending on how many panels cross the density threshold into replacement. Roof recoat and reseal starts around seven hundred fifty dollars. Full membrane replacement runs from about thirty five hundred into the eighteen thousand dollar range.
Awning fabric replacement runs four hundred to twenty five hundred dollars, and awning arm and motor work five hundred to thirty five hundred. Where an arm tore out backing structure, add wall repair to that figure, because the mount is only as good as what it threads into.
Calendar time on storm claims is driven by panel availability and by whether decking work is involved. A skin and membrane job with parts on hand can run three to five weeks. Add decking replacement and structural work under it and six to eight weeks is realistic. Both figures include the claim cycle, because quoting a repair time and adding approval time afterward is how owners end up planning trips around dates that were never achievable.
