How Do You Deal With Rodent Chewed Wiring After Storage?

Every spring the shop sees the same sequence from coaches that sat through a season. Owner returns, connects shore power, something smells hot, and now there is a burned harness on top of the original chewing.
Why is stripped insulation worse than a cut wire?
A cut wire is honest. The circuit is dead, you know something is wrong, and the failure is contained.
Stripped insulation is not. Rodents gnaw for two reasons: to manage continuously growing incisors, and because many wire jackets are made with plasticizers and soy-based compounds that read as food. Both behaviors produce shallow damage. The copper stays intact and the circuit keeps working. What has changed is that the conductor is now exposed inside a confined space, often bundled against a dozen other exposed conductors in the same loom, frequently packed in nesting material that is dry, fibrous and highly combustible.
Three failure modes follow. A short between two exposed conductors, which dumps current through whatever path exists until a fuse opens, assuming a correctly sized fuse is present. A short to chassis ground, which on a 12V system can carry enormous current from a battery bank with no meaningful internal resistance. And arc tracking, where a small intermittent arc carbonizes the surrounding insulation and progressively builds a conductive path. The third is the one that starts fires, and it is invisible on a multimeter until it is well advanced.
Where do you actually look?
Rodents are predictable. They travel along existing paths and nest in warm, enclosed, undisturbed spaces. Check in this order.
The chassis harness above the frame rails. Wire looms strapped to the underside of the coach are the most exposed run in the vehicle and the easiest to reach from the ground.
Behind and beneath appliances. The refrigerator bay, the water heater bay, the furnace compartment and the area around any 120V converter. These stay warmer than ambient and offer enclosure on three sides.
Inside the generator compartment and around its harness. Sound insulation in those compartments is ideal nesting material.
Wall and ceiling cavities near a known entry point. Rodents enter through plumbing chases, the gap around the sewer outlet, the propane line pass-through, and any unsealed penetration in the underbelly.
The engine bay and dash harness on a motorhome. Warm after a drive, sheltered, and full of soft loom.
Storage bays and the underbelly membrane. A torn coroplast belly panel is an open door, and once inside, the entire floor cavity is accessible.
Look for the physical evidence rather than the damage itself. Droppings, shredded insulation, seed hulls, urine staining on a panel, and a distinct ammonia smell all mark an active or recent route. Where you find the evidence, the wiring within arm's reach of it has been chewed.
What should you check before reconnecting power?
Four steps, and none should be skipped.
Visual on every accessible loom. Slide loom covers back rather than looking at them. Damage hides on the underside of a bundle where the rodent sat.
Continuity and insulation resistance. A basic continuity check confirms the conductor is intact. It does not confirm the insulation is. Checking resistance from each conductor to chassis ground, with the circuit isolated, is what finds a compromised jacket before it finds you.
Fuse and breaker survey. Blown fuses are a map. Note which ones and what they feed, because that narrows the search dramatically.
Smell and touch on the converter, inverter and distribution panel. Heat discoloration on a terminal block, a browned wire jacket, or a screw that will not torque properly are all signs that something already ran hot.
If you find damage anywhere, assume there is more. Rodents do not chew a single wire and leave. The repair scope should follow the evidence trail, not the one symptom that made you look.
Should the harness be patched or replaced?
Depends on how much of the run is compromised and where it lives.
Isolated damage in an accessible location gets repaired: cut back to clean insulation on both sides, join with a properly crimped connector rated for the conductor size, seal with adhesive-lined heat shrink, and re-support the loom so the splice is not carrying load. That is a durable repair when it is done with the right terminals and the right tooling.
Damage inside a wall, a ceiling, or a sealed underbelly run is different. Pulling a new conductor through the original path is usually faster and always better than opening a wall to make three splices. On coaches where the loom is bonded into the structure, a new run gets routed and secured on a new path.
Damage across a whole bundle means the bundle gets replaced. There is no version of "patch nine of eleven conductors" that anybody should sign off on.
The other half of the job is exclusion. Repairing wiring without closing the entry point buys you one season. Sealing the underbelly, closing the plumbing chases, screening the furnace and refrigerator vents, and repairing torn coroplast is what keeps the repair from repeating.
What does this cost?
Posted 12V and 120V electrical diagnostics runs $285 to $5,000 and up, with the wide top end reflecting the fact that finding damage in a sealed structure is the expensive part, not fixing it. Mechanical and electrical labor is billed at $260 per hour, and in-depth diagnostic time runs one hour minimum at $285 per hour, credited against an authorized repair.

How do you keep it from happening again?
Storage practice does more than any single product.
Seal the openings. Every plumbing chase, every wiring pass-through, every gap around the sewer outlet, and any tear in the underbelly membrane. Steel wool packed into a gap and sealed over works because rodents will not chew through it.
Screen the vents. Furnace, water heater and refrigerator exterior vents accept purpose-made screens that do not restrict airflow.
Remove the food. Not just pantry items. Bar soap, candles, paper products and pet food all qualify. So does the seed that blows in through an open window in a storage yard.
Disconnect and maintain the batteries rather than leaving everything live for months. A coach with no energized circuits cannot arc, and a bank on a proper maintenance charge lasts longer anyway. Getting it looked at
Bring photographs of any evidence you found and a list of which circuits behave oddly. If something already ran hot, say so first, because that changes the inspection order.
