A full refinish strips or sands a coach exterior back to a sound uniform substrate, repairs the surface defects that emerge, then rebuilds the coating system: primer, sealer, basecoat and clear applied at controlled film thickness and cured under controlled conditions. The whole body is shot in one pass so no dry edge exists anywhere.

Taking inventory of what you are actually painting

The first hour of a repaint is spent finding out what the vehicle is made of, and on a coach that answer changes several times along its length. Molded fiberglass at the caps. Laminated composite or bonded Filon through the sidewalls. Aluminum extrusion at moldings and awning rails. Steel or aluminum at compartment doors. Polyurethane or ABS at fascias, mirror housings and light bezels. Existing vinyl over some of it. Sometimes a previous repaint over some of it as well.

Each of those needs different preparation and, in several cases, a different primer. Flexible substrates need a flex additive or a dedicated flexible primer or the coating will crack at the first cold morning. Bare aluminum needs an etch or a self etching primer to establish adhesion, since paint on unprepared aluminum releases in sheets. Fiberglass needs sanding to a specific profile and it needs any wax or release residue removed, which on an original gelcoat surface is a real consideration. Steel needs corrosion protection at every bare spot.

Coating thickness measurement is the other part of the survey and it decides more than owners expect. A gauge reading across the body reveals where previous repairs added film, where a panel has been sanded thin, and whether the existing system has enough integrity to be sanded and painted over at all. A body with widely varying readings and a failing top layer is usually a strip candidate. A body with consistent readings and a sound but tired finish can be sanded and recoated, which is a fundamentally different job in both hours and cost.

Strip, sand and the question of what stays

The largest decision in any repaint is how far back to go, and it is genuinely a judgment call rather than a rule. Stripping to the substrate gives you a known starting point and eliminates every question about what is underneath, at a substantial cost in labor and with real risk on thin laminates where aggressive media can damage the surface itself. Sanding and recoating is faster and cheaper and only works if the existing system is sound.

The test that decides it is adhesion. If the existing coating is firmly attached across the vehicle, a scuff and recoat builds on a stable foundation. If it is releasing anywhere, a new coating over it inherits that failure, because a paint film is only as attached as the layer beneath it. Peeling clear, lifting edges around old repairs, and areas that flake under a tape test all point in the same direction.

The middle path is the most common outcome in practice: strip the areas that have failed, sand the areas that have not, and use a sealer to unify the two so the color develops evenly over a surface that is chemically and visually consistent. Getting the transitions right at the boundary between stripped and sanded areas is the skilled part, since a step in film thickness there will show through the finish as a visible line under raking light no matter how much clear goes over it.

Primer, sealer and controlling film build

Primer does two jobs that are worth separating. It establishes adhesion between the substrate and everything above it, and it provides a sandable layer that can be blocked flat. Those are different requirements and they are usually met by different products, which is why a proper job frequently uses an adhesion primer over the substrate and a high build primer over that.

Blocking the high build layer is where a coach body actually becomes flat. Long boards worked in a cross hatch pattern cut the high spots and leave primer in the low spots, and the pattern of what remains shows exactly where the surface deviates. On a large sidewall this stage takes real time and it is the single step that most distinguishes a good repaint from an adequate one, because every wave left in the primer will be magnified by a gloss finish over it.

Sealer follows and it is not optional on a body with mixed history. It gives the basecoat a uniform color and uniform porosity to develop over, which matters because basecoat sprayed over patchy primer will develop differently across the patches even when the color is mixed identically. Total film build across the system also has to stay within what the products specify. Too little clear and the ultraviolet protection is thin. Too much and the film becomes brittle and prone to cracking at flex points, which is a failure mode we see regularly on coaches that were previously refinished by someone chasing depth of gloss.

Basecoat, clear and what cure actually means

Basecoat carries the color and almost none of the durability. It goes on in light coats to a uniform hiding thickness, and on metallic or pearl colors the application technique determines how the flake orients, which determines how the color reads at an angle. Spraying a metallic too wet lets the flake settle flat and the color goes dark. Too dry and the flake stands up and the color goes light and blotchy. The window between those is narrower on a large panel because the gun is traveling further and conditions change across the pass.

Clear is where the durability lives. It is the sacrificial layer that takes the ultraviolet energy, and it does that by absorbing radiation into stabilizer chemistry designed to be consumed over time. Once those stabilizers are used up, the polymer itself starts breaking down, and that is the point at which a finish goes chalky. Applying clear at the specified film build is what determines how long that takes, which is why film build is measured rather than eyeballed.

Cure is not the same as dry. A finish is dry to the touch in an hour and is nowhere near cured. Solvent continues leaving the film for days, and cross linking continues for longer. Reassembling a vehicle onto a finish that has not cured leaves impressions from gaskets and trim. Polishing an uncured finish can cause it to shrink back and reveal sanding scratches weeks later. Baking accelerates it and does not eliminate it, so a proper schedule includes cure time as a real line item rather than something that happens while the vehicle waits for pickup.

Booth conditions and why Southern California weather matters

Paint is a chemical reaction happening on a surface, and reactions are sensitive to temperature and humidity. Spraying a large body means that reaction is running for a long continuous period across a large area, so conditions that would barely affect a fender panel have plenty of time to affect a forty foot side.

Temperature controls flash time, which is how long solvent takes to leave the film between coats. Too cold and solvent stays trapped, which produces dieback, where the gloss drops days later as the film continues to shrink. Too hot and the material flashes before it flows out, which produces texture. Both of those are visible on a large flat panel and largely invisible on a small curved one, which is why coach refinishing demands tighter control than a bumper repair does.

Humidity is the Southern California variable that swings most. Coastal marine layer mornings in Orange County can put moisture into the air that will blush a finish, while a Santa Ana afternoon can drop humidity and raise temperature dramatically within hours. A controlled booth removes that variable, which is the entire argument for spraying indoors under managed airflow rather than under a canopy. Airflow also carries overspray and particulate away from the wet film, and on a body with this much surface area, particulate control is what separates a finish that needs light denibbing from one that needs to be cut down and polished across its entire length.

Full repaint, partial refinish and color change

Not every tired coach needs a full repaint, and the alternatives are worth understanding before committing to the largest version of the job. A partial refinish addresses specific panels or a specific zone, most commonly the front cap and the forward third of the roof, which are the areas that take the most ultraviolet exposure and the most road abrasion and therefore fail first.

The catch with partial work is the blend boundary. Refinishing a section of a coach means matching new paint to old paint that has already shifted, and matching it well enough that the transition is invisible under afternoon sun. That is achievable on a sound original finish with a good blend, and it becomes progressively harder as the surrounding finish oxidizes. Where the existing paint has gone chalky, a partial refinish will look correct on delivery and stand out within a year as the old surface continues to fade around the new.

A color change is a full repaint with additional considerations. Everything that gets removed for masking has to come off rather than being taped around, because a color change telegraphs at every edge where the old color remains: door jambs, compartment openings, under moldings, behind the awning rail. Doing it properly means opening those areas up, which adds labor. Doing it improperly is immediately obvious the first time anyone opens a compartment door. This is the same reason a color change costs more than a repaint in the original color even though the spraying is identical.

    Coating thickness is measured across the vehicle and the substrate is identified panel by panel. That survey decides what gets stripped, what gets sanded and what gets sealed, and it prevents sanding through a thin area that nobody knew was thin.

    Disassembly and masking plan

    Lights, moldings, badges, awning rails, mirrors and hardware come off rather than being masked around wherever removal is practical. Every part removed is one less edge in the finish, and edges are where refinish work reveals itself.

    Strip, sand and repair

    Failing coating is removed, sound coating is scuffed to a uniform profile, and every surface defect exposed during that process is repaired. This stage generates most of the labor in a repaint and it determines almost all of the final quality.

  4. 04

    Prime, block and seal

    High build primer goes on, then the body is blocked flat with long boards, which reveals waves and low spots that were invisible under the old finish. A sealer coat follows to give the color a uniform base to develop over.

    Color and clear in one pass

    The full body is sprayed continuously so no dry edge exists, with the booth held at controlled temperature and airflow. Clear is applied at the film build the product specifies rather than by eye, which is what determines how long it survives ultraviolet exposure.

    Cure, cut, polish and reassemble

    The finish cures fully before anyone touches it, then it is denibbed, cut and polished to a uniform gloss. Hardware, moldings and trim go back with new sealant and fresh gaskets, and the vehicle is inspected in daylight before release.

How much does it cost to repaint a motorhome?
The published range on this site spans a light single stage refinish on a smaller unit through a full multi stage repaint with graphics on a large diesel coach. The variables that move it most are body length, the condition of the existing finish, whether the surface needs stripping or only scuffing, how much surface repair emerges during prep, and whether the scheme includes graphics or a color change. A written estimate follows an inspection at the shop, because film readings and adhesion testing are what set the prep hours.
Should I repaint or wrap my RV?
Paint if the goal is longevity and the surface underneath needs work anyway, since a repaint corrects the substrate while a wrap covers it. Wrap if the goal is a complex graphic scheme, a reversible color change, or a shorter timeline, and the existing finish is sound enough to adhere to. Wrap film in this climate typically has a shorter service life than a properly applied paint system, and it does not adhere reliably to oxidized or peeling clear. The condition of what you have now usually decides it.
Will you paint the roof as well?
That depends on what the roof is. Fiberglass and aluminum roofs are refinished along with the body and it is worth doing, since the roof takes more ultraviolet exposure than any other surface. Rubber membrane roofs, whether EPDM or TPO, are not painted with automotive coatings and are instead treated with the appropriate roof coating system or replaced. We will identify which type your coach has during the survey and scope the roof accordingly rather than assuming.
Can original factory graphics be recreated after a repaint?
Usually yes, by one of two routes. Painted graphics are reproduced by measuring and templating the original layout before it is removed, then masking and spraying the new scheme. Vinyl graphics are reproduced by photographing and measuring the original, redrawing the artwork and printing new film. Many manufacturers no longer supply decal kits for discontinued models, so reproduction is often the only route available. Documenting the original thoroughly before prep begins is the step that makes it possible.
How long before I can wash or wax a fresh finish?
Wash gently with a pH neutral product after about two weeks, using no pressure washer near edges and no abrasive media. Hold off on wax or sealant for roughly sixty to ninety days so the film can complete outgassing, since sealing the surface early can trap solvent and cause the gloss to drop. Ceramic coating follows the same waiting period. We provide specific timing when the vehicle is released, since it varies with the product used and the cure schedule the finish received.
