That last point is the one that catches Orange County owners. A unit stored ten months of the year and towed to Anza-Borrego and back is not lightly used from the running gear's point of view. It is a unit whose grease has been sitting undisturbed while the rubber components oxidize in the sun.

Why do bearings fail on low mileage fifth wheels?

Because grease separates and because water finds a way into a hub that sits still.

Wheel bearing grease is oil suspended in a soap thickener. Parked for months in heat, the oil migrates out of the thickener and pools at the low point of the hub, leaving the rollers riding on a stiff residue that does not carry a load film. The first few miles of the next tow run those rollers nearly dry, and that is when the pitting starts.

Add a temperature cycle to that. A hub that heats up on a descent and then cools overnight draws a small amount of air past the seal every cycle. In a coastal climate that air carries moisture, and moisture in a bearing produces rust on the roller surface that then acts like grinding compound.

The audible warning is a low growl that changes with speed but not with braking. The tactile warning is a hub that is noticeably hotter than the others at a fuel stop. If you have either, stop using the unit and get it to a shop rather than continuing.

Tire service and bearing repack runs $250 to $1,200. Electric brake and axle service, which is where a spun bearing race ends up, runs $300 to $5,000. Repacking on a two year interval is cheap by comparison, and on a fifth wheel that tows loaded grades it is worth doing annually.

What actually wears out in a trailer brake assembly?

Three things, in a fairly predictable order.

The magnet goes first. It is a coil in a housing that gets dragged across the machined face of the drum every time the brakes apply. That face wears the magnet down over time, and a worn magnet no longer sits flat, which means it grabs unevenly and pulls the trailer to one side. Magnets also fail electrically, and a magnet with a shorted winding draws current without producing force, which fools a brake controller into reading a healthy circuit.

The shoes go second, and unevenly. On a tandem axle fifth wheel the forward axle usually carries more braking load, so its shoes wear ahead of the rear. Owners who only inspect one wheel often inspect the wrong one.

The drum goes third. Heat scoring and out of round wear both make the magnet chatter, and once the machined magnet surface is grooved, new magnets will not last.

The wiring is the fourth item and the one most often misdiagnosed. A brake that works on the bench and not on the road is frequently a corroded ground at the axle or a chafed lead where the harness passes the equalizer. Lighting and wiring diagnostics runs $285 to $2,500 and a 7 way and 4 way connector repair runs $200 to $800. Electric, surge and hydraulic brake service runs $300 to $5,500.

Why do shackle bushings matter more on a fifth wheel than a travel trailer?

Because of pin weight and because of how a leaf spring suspension distributes load.

A fifth wheel carries fifteen to twenty five percent of its total weight on the hitch pin, which means the axles are supporting a heavier share of a heavier unit than a comparable travel trailer's axles are. The equalizer sits between the two springs on a tandem and pivots on bronze or nylon bushings, and every road input works those bushings.

When they wear, the equalizer no longer shares load evenly between the two axles. One axle starts carrying more, which shortens the life of its bearings and its tires, and the whole assembly begins to hammer instead of pivot. A visual check is easy: with the unit level and loaded, look at the gap around each shackle bolt. Ovaled holes and side to side play mean the bushings are gone.

Wet bolt kits with grease fittings are the common upgrade, and they exist precisely because the factory bushings are a wear item that nobody can service. Suspension service runs $400 to $6,500 and axle service and replacement runs $500 to $5,500.

The related check is the axle itself. Look at the tire wear pattern. Feathering on one edge across a whole axle usually means a bent axle or a spring that has shifted on its center pin, not an alignment problem in the automotive sense.

What about tires that look fine?

Trailer tires age out. Sidewall compounds oxidize under ultraviolet exposure and the carcass loses flexibility whether the unit is rolling or parked.

Read the four digit date code on the sidewall. The first two digits are the week, the last two are the year. Most owners we talk with are shocked to find that the tires on a unit they bought used are already older than the interval they should be replaced on, regardless of tread depth.

Then read the pressure cold, before the unit moves. An underinflated trailer tire builds heat in the sidewall rather than the tread, and heat is what causes the belt separations that take a fender and a section of sidewall with them when they let go. A separation on the 91 at highway speed does not stay a tire problem. It becomes a fiberglass cap repair at $750 to $12,000 and up plus whatever it did to the plumbing that runs through the belly.

Tire mount, balance and replacement runs $250 to $1,500. That is the cheapest structural insurance available on a towable.

Which parts of the hitch and frame deserve a look?

The kingpin box, the pin box mounting bolts, the landing gear and the frame welds around all three.

Kingpin box bolts loosen. Check them with a wrench rather than by eye, and check them again after the first few hundred miles following any hitch work. Leveling jack service runs $300 to $4,500, and a landing gear leg that has been run under load while the unit was not level is one of the more common failures we see on units that get parked on a slope.

Frame welds crack where the pin box mounts and where the axle hangers attach, and both are load paths that see cyclic stress. A hairline crack found on a driveway inspection is a welding job. The same crack found after it propagates is a much larger conversation. Frame and structural welding runs $750 to $20,000 and up, and a hitch, coupler, gooseneck and fifth wheel service is $400 to $5,500.

Tongue, coupler and safety chain repair on a bumper pull runs $250 to $1,500 for owners who tow a second trailer behind the truck.

What is a sensible pre tow routine for a Lake Forest owner?

Do the checks a week before you leave, not the morning of. A week gives you time to get parts and shop time if something turns up.

Cold tire pressures on all four corners and the spare. Date codes read. Lug torque checked with a torque wrench, then rechecked after fifty miles. Hub temperatures compared after a short shakedown drive. Brake controller gain set on a flat empty stretch until the trailer brakes lead the truck slightly. Shackles and wet bolts greased. Landing gear cycled through full travel. Lights checked with a second person watching, including the running lights on both sides.

If the unit has been in storage all winter, add a look at the belly pan and the propane lines for rodent damage, because that is a Southern California storage lot reality.

Where does the work get done?

The usual run is the 241 north to the 91, and it takes twenty five to thirty five minutes when traffic cooperates. There is no roadside option, so the unit comes to the shop and everything is completed on the property.

Running gear work is worth scheduling ahead of a trip rather than after a failure. A bearing repack booked in March is an appointment. The same bearing discovered on a shoulder in July is a tow and a much longer week.
