What Does Sidewall Delamination Look Like Before The Bubble Appears?

Delamination is not a paint problem. It is a structural bond failure inside a sandwich panel, and the exterior skin is simply the layer where you finally notice it.

What is actually coming apart inside the wall?

A laminated sidewall is a bonded sandwich. From outside in you typically have a fiberglass skin, a layer of luan plywood, a block foam or aluminum framed core, another luan layer, and an interior finish panel. Those layers are pressed together with adhesive in a vacuum bonding process at the factory.

Delamination means the adhesive bond between two of those layers has released. Once it does, the panel loses most of its stiffness, because a sandwich panel gets its strength from the layers acting as one unit rather than from any individual layer.

The most common cause is moisture reaching the luan. Wet luan swells, loses its grip on both the adhesive and its own fibers, and never recovers when it dries. The second most common cause is heat cycling on a dark graphic. A dark decal absorbs more solar energy than the white gelcoat around it, so the skin under it expands more, and after enough cycles the bond line under that decal gives up first. That is why so many separations start along the swoosh graphic on a fifth wheel rather than in the middle of a plain panel.

Impact is the third cause and the easiest to date, since the owner usually remembers the tree branch or the pillar in the campground.

Which early signs are worth acting on?

Start with reflections. Park the unit so a straight line reflects across the sidewall, a light pole, a fence rail, a building edge, anything with a hard edge. Walk the length of the wall and watch the reflected line. A sound panel keeps the line straight. A panel that has started to release shows a gentle waviness, often only visible from a low angle.

Then tap. Use a knuckle or the plastic handle of a screwdriver and work a grid across the panel. Bonded material returns a tight, dead thud. Released material returns a hollow, drumlike note. The boundary between the two tones maps the affected area better than anything you can see.

Then look at fasteners. Every screw through an awning rail, a rub rail, a compartment door frame or a marker light passes through the laminate. When the layers separate, those screws stop being clamped and begin to back out. A row of screw heads standing a couple of millimeters proud of the surface is a reliable early flag.

Finally, check the seams and the gloss. Gelcoat over a released area often loses gloss before it deforms, because it is no longer supported evenly. A dull rectangle in an otherwise shiny wall usually has a story behind it.

Where does moisture get in on a fifth wheel?

Almost always at a penetration or a transition, rarely through the middle of a panel.

The list, in the order we find them: the front cap to sidewall seam, the awning rail, the slide room opening flange, window frames, the rub rail, marker lights, compartment door frames, and the belly to sidewall joint on the lower edge. On fifth wheels specifically, the front cap seam takes the worst of it, because that surface faces the wind and the road spray for the entire tow.

Sealant maintenance is the whole defense. Window and frame reseal runs $250 to $3,500 and slide out seal replacement runs $400 to $3,000, both of which are ordinary maintenance numbers. Delamination repair runs $1,500 to $20,000 and up, and water damage, delamination and soft spot repair on a camper or fifth wheel runs $750 to $18,000 and up. The ratio between the two categories is the argument for keeping sealant current.

Why does catching it early change the repair so much?

Because the repair method depends entirely on whether the substrate is dry and intact.

When a small area has released but the luan is dry and the skin is undamaged, the repair is an injection. Access holes are drilled at the boundary, a structural adhesive is injected into the void, and the panel is clamped or vacuum pressed flat while it cures. That is a contained job with a predictable price.

When the luan is wet or crumbled, injection has nothing to bond to. Now the outer skin has to come off, the wet material has to come out, the framing behind it has to be checked, new substrate has to go in, and a new skin has to be bonded and refinished. On an aluminum sided unit that becomes aluminum skin and sidewall replacement at $2,500 to $25,000 and up. On a fiberglass unit it becomes a delamination repair at the upper end of its range, followed by refinishing.

Refinishing is its own line. Color match and panel blending runs $500 to $5,000 and up. A full paint refinish runs $5,000 to $35,000 and up. On a unit with a factory multi color graphic scheme, matching a single repaired panel to twelve year old sun faded gelcoat is genuinely difficult, and sometimes blending into the adjacent panels is the only honest way to make it disappear.

How do you tell delamination from a soft floor or a bad slide?

They overlap, so check all three when you find one.

A soft floor is a subfloor delamination rather than a wall one, and it usually announces itself underfoot near a slide opening, a bathroom or an entry door. Flooring and subfloor replacement runs $500 to $8,500 on a camper. If you find a soft spot at the base of a wall, assume water traveled down inside the wall and check the wall above it.

A slide room that binds, drags or leaves a wet line is a mechanism and seal question first, and we covered that in reading a slide room that runs out of sync. But a slide opening flange that has been leaking will delaminate the wall around the opening, so a wet slide and a rippled wall on the same side are the same problem viewed from two angles.

Structural framing behind a released panel is the third thing to check. If aluminum framing has corroded or a wood stud has rotted, the panel repair alone will not hold. That is what a structural damage assessment is for.

What should an owner do before bringing the unit in?

Document, then stop poking at it.

Photograph the affected area with a straight edge reflection visible, from at least two angles, with something in frame for scale. Note the date. If you have older photos from a trip or a listing, dig them out, because a comparison across two years tells a scope story that a single photo cannot.

Do not drill exploratory holes and do not peel a lifting decal to see how far it goes. Both create new entry points and both complicate the repair. If a section of skin is lifting badly enough to catch wind, tape it flat for the tow with a wide removable tape rather than pulling on it.

Then bring the unit to the shop. A moisture survey with a meter across the panel, plus a tap map, tells us how far the release actually runs, and that boundary is what drives the estimate. An RV systems evaluation is $150, credited against an authorized repair, and the written estimate is produced after the unit is inspected on site at our facility.

Every repair is completed at the facility, so the unit needs to come to us. Laminate work in particular needs a controlled bay, vacuum pressure and cure time that cannot be reproduced anywhere else.
