The owner assumed he had four unrelated problems and a run of bad luck. He had one problem that arrived through the shore cord and spread outward in about four seconds.

What actually happens when a pedestal is wired wrong?

A properly wired thirty amp or fifty amp pedestal keeps hot, neutral and ground doing separate jobs. Neutral carries return current at close to ground potential. Ground carries nothing at all under normal conditions and exists so that a fault has somewhere to go besides you.

When a pedestal is wired with hot and neutral reversed, or with an open neutral on a fifty amp service, those assumptions break. On a fifty amp connection with an open neutral, the two hot legs stop sharing a stable center point, and the loads on each leg start dividing the full line voltage between them according to their own resistance. A lightly loaded leg can climb well above its rated voltage while the other one sags. Everything plugged into the high leg gets more than it was built for, and electronics fail first because electronics have the least tolerance.

That is why the failure pattern looked scattered. It was not scattered. It was every device on one leg with a switching power supply in it.

Why did the diagnostic order matter more than the parts list?

Because replacing a burned component before you have proven the source is how a coach eats a second set of parts.

The intake conversation went like this. He wanted the refrigerator fixed first, since that was the failure he could see and the one that had ruined a weekend of groceries. The correct order was the exact opposite. Nothing gets replaced until the incoming path is proven clean and the protection devices between the cord and the loads are known good, because a new control board on a coach with a damaged transfer switch is a new control board with a short future.

So the sequence was shore cord and inlet, then the automatic transfer switch, then the main distribution panel, then the converter and inverter, then each load. In depth diagnostic time runs one hour minimum at $285 per hour and is credited back against an authorized repair, which is worth knowing because on a job like this the diagnostic hours are the part that saves money rather than the part that costs it.

Inside the transfer switch we found exactly what the theory predicted. Contact welding on one leg, discoloration on the neutral bus and a housing that smelled like it had been hot. That component is the reason the damage stopped where it did instead of continuing into the branch circuits.

What got replaced and what got left alone?

Replaced: the transfer switch, the converter section of the charger, the refrigerator control board, and the start capacitor and control board on the affected air conditioner. Left alone: the second air conditioner, the water heater board, every twelve volt light, the inverter and the entire fresh water side of the coach, because testing showed they were fine and nobody pays this shop to replace working parts.

That second list is the part owners tend to be suspicious of, and the way you settle it is with readings rather than reassurance. Each surviving device got a load test with numbers written down and handed over at delivery. If one of them fails in six months the owner has a baseline showing it was healthy when it left, which is a more useful document than an opinion.

Planning bands for the operations involved. Transfer switch and shore power diagnostics runs $285 to $1,500. Inverter and charger replacement runs $750 to $4,500. Refrigerator service runs $400 to $4,500. AC replacement and soft start install runs $750 to $4,500. Twelve volt and one hundred twenty volt electrical diagnostics runs $285 to $5,000 and up, and on this coach it landed near the low end because the pattern told us where to look.

Was this an insurance claim or an owner paid repair?

Both, in sequence, and that is a common shape worth describing.

Recreational vehicle policies often carry coverage for sudden electrical damage from an external source, and this was about as external as it gets. The obstacle was proof. A carrier looking at a list of four failed appliances has no reason to believe they failed together rather than aging out over three years, and the owner had no photograph of a pedestal because he had already unplugged and driven home.

What carried the file was the physical evidence in the transfer switch plus the park itself. He called the campground and the maintenance staff confirmed the pedestal had been taken out of service the same week. That, plus dated photographs of the welded contacts and the discolored neutral bus, converted a claim of coincidence into a claim of causation. Approval came through on the second submission.

The portion that did not go on the claim was preventive. He elected to add surge and voltage protection with an automatic disconnect, which is not damage repair and belongs on its own invoice. What would have stopped the damage before it started?

A protection device between the pedestal and the coach, sized for the service, that measures voltage on both legs and disconnects instead of merely announcing a problem. Older surge suppressors clamp transients. They do not save you from a sustained overvoltage condition on an open neutral, which is a different failure entirely and the one that ruins appliances.

The second habit costs nothing. Test the pedestal before you plug in. A basic three light tester will find a reversed hot and neutral and an open ground in under a minute. It will not find an open neutral on a fifty amp service under load, which is why the protection device is the part that actually matters, but between the two you have covered most of what a tired park pedestal will hand you.

The third one is about parks rather than gear. If your neighbor mentions that his lights dim when his air conditioner starts, or that a pedestal has a scorched face plate, treat that as information. Coaches at a given loop tend to be plugged into the same aging infrastructure.

How should you bring in a coach with an electrical event?

Do not keep cycling it to see if it comes back. Every attempt to start a damaged compressor or reset a fried board is another chance to take out something adjacent.

Write down the order in which things stopped working, as best you can reconstruct it. That sequence is genuine diagnostic information and it is gone by the time you get to the shop unless somebody wrote it down.

Bring the shore cord and adapters with the coach. They are part of the path and we test them.
