Pace American Repair For Lake Forest Owners

Pace American builds enclosed cargo, motorcycle and racing trailers using aluminum skins over a tube frame. These units live harder lives than recreational trailers because they are working equipment, and the repairs that matter on them are the ramp, the rear frame and the screw lines that hold the skin on.

What we see on Pace American units

Patterns specific to how this manufacturer builds, rather than generic RV advice.

01

Screw line elongation on screwed skin models

On the screwed skin tiers, every fastener hole in the aluminum sheet is a place where the panel can move. Loading and unloading flexes the box, the holes elongate slightly, and eventually a row of screws is holding nothing. The visible symptom is a skin that oil cans and rattles at highway speed and a seam that starts weeping. Simply replacing the screws with larger ones works for a season. The panel needs the elongated section replaced or backed, because a bigger fastener in a wallowed hole is a temporary fix by definition.

02

Ramp spring assist and hinge line separation

The rear ramp is heavy and the spring assist is what makes it manageable. When the assist weakens, users start dropping the ramp rather than lowering it, and each drop shocks the hinge line and the rear frame it is welded to. The hinge fasteners begin pulling through the rear frame skin. Owners describe a ramp that is hard to lift. The real problem is usually that the assist has gone and the resulting abuse has damaged the frame, so replacing the assist alone leaves a compromised hinge line in place.

03

Front V nose seam splitting on aerodynamic models

The V nose front on many Pace models is formed from two skin sections meeting at a vertical seam on the centreline, and that seam takes the full pressure load at highway speed plus every stone the tow vehicle throws. The seam splits from the top down, usually starting just under the roof termination. Sealing it from outside traps water behind the skin. The repair that holds is to open the seam, reinstate the backing behind it and reclose it with a mechanical joint rather than a bead of sealant.

04

Interior liner separation after a load shift

The plywood or composite interior liner contributes to the stiffness of the wall assembly, and a load that shifts in transit and strikes a wall from inside can break the liner free from the framing without leaving any external mark. The trailer then flexes more than it should, which accelerates every other failure on this list. When we inspect a Pace with unexplained skin movement we check liner attachment from inside, because the cause is frequently a hit the owner never knew happened.
