Sprinter And Camper Van Owners
Typical caller: A camper van owner in south Orange County who bought a converted Sprinter or Transit and uses it as both a weekend rig and a daily driver.
The camper van is the hardest vehicle in the recreational category to get repaired properly, and the reason is organisational rather than technical. Almost every shop is set up for one half of it. An automotive collision centre has the frame equipment, the paint system and the training to repair a unitised steel van body to the manufacturer's published procedure, and it has no idea what to do with a bonded composite roof cap, a lithium bank behind the galley or a lift top with a canvas bellows. A recreational vehicle shop has exactly the opposite profile. The owner ends up as project manager between two vendors who each want the other to go first.
We take the whole vehicle. That matters most at the joints, because that is where these vans actually fail. The high roof is a composite shell bonded to the cut edge of a factory steel roof, and steel and composite move at different rates through a Southern California summer. A fine crack develops along one side, usually starting where a roof fan already interrupts the panel. Fill it and paint it and it comes back within a year, because the joint is still doing what it was doing. Grind it out, rebuild it with a flexible structural adhesive and a glass tape bridge, and refinish the full roof edge, and it stops.
Parking structure strikes deserve their own paragraph, because they are the dominant loss for tall vans in Orange County. A clearance bar or a low soffit catches the leading roof edge at low speed, which sounds minor and is not. The load path runs from the roof cap into the A pillar area and into the windshield header, so the visible scrape is often the least important part of the damage. We check the header and the pillar geometry on every roof edge strike, and we check the windshield bond, because a header that has moved a couple of millimetres puts uneven preload into the glass and produces a leak the following winter.
One last practical point for owners who effectively live in these vehicles. There is no version of this repair that happens anywhere except our shop. The van has to come to Yorba Linda, and while it is here it is a repair in progress rather than a residence. What usually goes wrong
Body shops that can repair the van will not touch the conversion, and RV shops that understand the conversion will not touch a unitised steel body, so the owner ends up coordinating two vendors.
The high roof is a composite cap bonded to a cut steel roof edge, and a crack along that bond line looks cosmetic while behaving structurally.
Parking structures in Irvine and Newport are the single biggest threat to a high roof van, and the resulting roof edge damage is expensive out of proportion to how it looks.
Aftermarket conversions add value that never appears in a standard valuation guide, so a well built van can be underinsured by a large margin without the owner realising it.
Solar panels, roof fans, awnings and racks all penetrate the roof, and a single impact usually disturbs several penetrations at once.
Owners frequently live out of the van for weeks at a time, so downtime is not an inconvenience, it is the loss of a home.
Rear door alignment on a loaded van drifts slowly, and by the time the doors will not latch cleanly the owner has usually been forcing them for months.
What we do about it
- Repair the steel chassis body using automotive panel practice and the habitation build using composite practice, in the same facility rather than across two.
- Rebuild high roof bond lines with a flexible structural adhesive and a glass tape bridge rather than filling and painting a joint that will crack again.
- Reseal and reflash roof penetrations as a set after any roof impact, since disturbing one usually disturbs the ones beside it.
- Correct rear and side door openings for square before adjusting strikers, because adjusting a striker to a racked opening accelerates the wear.
- Match factory van paint codes and blend into adjacent panels using the manufacturer's published procedure for that finish.
- Document the conversion components separately from chassis components so the value of the build is visible in the claim file.
How the claim tends to run
- A converted van sits on a fault line between two policy types. Some carriers write the whole vehicle as a motorhome once it has permanently installed cooking, sleeping and sanitary facilities. Others write it as a commercial or private passenger van and treat the conversion as contents. The difference decides whether a damaged galley is part of the loss or is a separate argument, so confirm which way your policy reads before you need it.
- Declared value and custom equipment endorsements exist precisely for this vehicle and are consistently under used. A professional conversion can represent more than half the vehicle's real value while contributing nothing to a standard book valuation. Keep the build invoice, the itemised component list and photographs of the finished interior, because at claim time those documents are the difference between a settlement based on a cargo van and one based on your actual vehicle.
- Mercedes Benz, Ford and Ram all publish position statements and repair procedures for their van bodies, including where sectioning is permitted and where structural adhesive is required. Carriers who fund an aftermarket panel or an unapproved sectioning location on a unitised body are funding a repair that departs from the manufacturer's written procedure, and that is worth raising in writing early rather than discovering at reassembly.
- Owners who use the van for any paid work, including occasional rental through a peer to peer platform, should assume a personal policy will exclude the loss. The rental platform's own coverage typically applies only during a booking window and often excludes the conversion. If the van earns money at all, a commercial or hybrid policy is the honest answer.
