That gradient is the useful part. It tells you where to look, what to protect first and why a coach can look excellent from the driveway and be chalked out where nobody stands.

Why does oxidation happen so much faster on the south side?

Because ultraviolet dose is cumulative and it is not evenly distributed. A unit parked in a fixed orientation for years takes far more exposure on one side than the other, and the difference is visible with a wash mitt long before it is visible from ten feet.

Gelcoat is a pigmented resin surface, not paint in the automotive sense. Ultraviolet energy breaks polymer chains at the very outer layer, and as those chains fail the surface goes from smooth to microscopically porous. Porous surfaces scatter light instead of reflecting it, which is what chalky means. Once the surface is porous it also holds dirt and road film, which accelerates everything, and it absorbs water, which is where the pink or grey staining comes from on older units.

Painted coaches with a clear coat over base fail differently and along the same timeline. The clear thins from the top surface down until it can no longer protect the pigment, and once clear coat failure starts it spreads laterally because the exposed edge is the weakest point. Clear that has begun to peel cannot be polished back. It has to be refinished.

The good news is that oxidation is a surface phenomenon for a long time before it becomes a structural one. Caught while it is still chalk, it is a correction job. Left until the surface has cracked and water is standing in the porosity, it is a paint job.

What does sun do to everything that is not paint?

Rubber and vinyl fail first and get noticed last.

Slide seals harden and lose their spring, which means they stop conforming to the wall and start letting water through on the next rain. Slide toppers and awning fabric lose tensile strength across the whole panel, so the failure is rarely a small tear that spreads. It is the fabric letting go across a seam during a wind event because it had no strength left anywhere.

Roof material is the expensive one. Membrane roofs chalk, thin and eventually go brittle at the edges. Fiberglass roofs oxidize like the sidewalls but nobody looks at them. Either way the roof is taking the worst dose on the vehicle and receives the least attention because it requires a ladder.

Tires age out on ultraviolet exposure and time long before they wear out on tread, and sidewall cracking is the visible symptom of a rubber compound that has already lost what it needed. Date codes matter more than tread depth on a unit that sits.

Interior surfaces go too. Dashboards, window shades, vinyl trim and any fabric within reach of a window all fade and stiffen. A windshield cover on a Class A is not a luxury item in this climate, it is the cheapest thing on this entire list.

What is the actual repair path for a chalked coach?

Decontamination wash first, then correction, then protection, in that order and without skipping.

Decontamination matters because polishing a surface that still carries embedded road film and mineral deposits grinds that contamination into the finish. Correction is a multi stage mechanical process that removes the failed outer layer of resin and exposes sound material underneath. That is why correction is finite: there is only so much gelcoat thickness available, and a unit that has been aggressively compounded three times has less to work with the fourth time.

Protection is what makes correction last. A corrected surface with nothing on it is a fresh, unprotected resin face in the same sun that ruined the last one, and in this climate it will chalk again quickly. A ceramic coating gives the surface a sacrificial layer with real ultraviolet resistance and makes washing easier, which in turn means the coach gets washed more often, which is its own protection.

Paint correction and ceramic coating runs $600 to $4,500 and detailing and reconditioning runs $500 to $3,500. If the clear has already failed rather than dulled, you are looking at full paint refinish at $5,000 to $35,000 and up, or a partial at $500 to $5,000 and up if the failure is confined to panels that can be blended.

The Paint Correction and Protection Package bundles the decontamination wash, multi stage correction, ceramic application and headlight and lens restoration at $1,975 rather than $2,450 separately. Correction without protection oxidizes again. Coating without correction seals the defects in. They belong in the same visit.

Does covering or shading a unit actually help?

Yes, and more than any product you can apply.

A covered storage space is the single most effective ultraviolet intervention available, and in Orange County it usually costs less per month than the difference it makes to the finish over a few years. Shade cloth over a driveway parked unit helps meaningfully. A fitted cover helps if it is breathable and fitted, and hurts if it is a tarp that traps moisture and abrades the surface every time the wind moves it.

If none of those is available, orientation is a lever nobody uses. Turning the unit around every few months on a driveway spreads the dose across both sides instead of destroying one. It costs nothing and it works.

Decals deserve a specific mention. Reproducing an original graphics kit for a discontinued floorplan means rebuilding artwork from photographs of the undamaged side and printing new film, which is real work. Decal and graphics replacement runs $500 to $5,500. Protecting the film you already have is dramatically cheaper than reproducing it.

When in the year should this work happen?

Correction and coating want a controlled indoor environment rather than a particular month, so scheduling is driven by your travel calendar rather than the weather. The one timing rule that does matter is to do it before a long storage period rather than after, so the protective layer is on the surface during the months the unit is sitting in the sun doing nothing.

Rubber and fabric inspection is better tied to the calendar. Late spring is the right time to look hard at seals, toppers, awning fabric and tire date codes, because those components are heading into their worst months and you would rather find a tired topper in the shop than at a campsite in August. Slide topper replacement runs $450 to $1,800 and awning fabric replacement runs $400 to $2,500, both of which are small jobs compared to what a failed topper lets into a slide roof.

What is the honest maintenance rhythm for a unit that lives here?

Wash more often than feels necessary, because road film accelerates surface breakdown and because the wash is when you notice things.

Look at the roof twice a year with your hands as well as your eyes, and treat chalk on your palm from a membrane roof as a scheduling signal rather than a curiosity.

Get the finish corrected and protected once, then maintain the protection rather than repeating the correction, because correction spends material you cannot get back.

And check seals and fabric in the spring, roof and sealant in the fall. Those two visits, done on purpose, keep most units out of the expensive bands entirely.
