Dutchmen Repair For Lake Forest Owners
What we see on Dutchmen units
Patterns specific to how this manufacturer builds, rather than generic RV advice.
Painted aluminum siding fade on Coleman Lantern trailers
These trailers use a painted aluminum exterior rather than a gelcoat or a printed decal skin, and the paint is a coil coating applied before the sheet was formed. Southern California sun fades that coating unevenly, with the roadside typically going first because it faces south when a trailer sits nose in at a storage lot. A replaced panel will not match the faded original no matter how good the colour match is, so the honest options are a full side or a deliberate two tone, and that conversation has to happen at the estimate.
Generator bay heat against the garage bulkhead on Voltage and Rubicon
The generator sits in a compartment sharing a bulkhead with the garage, and the insulation in that bulkhead was specified for a compartment that gets used occasionally. Owners who run a generator for hours at a time cook the adhesive on the garage side of the wall, which shows as a soft delaminated patch exactly where the generator sits and nowhere else. It reads like a water problem and it is a heat problem. Any repair there needs the bulkhead insulation and the heat shielding upgraded or the same patch returns.
Kodiak and Aerolite front cap seam release above the A frame
The laminated lines carry a molded front cap bonded to the sidewall along a vertical seam on each front corner, and the A frame transmits every hitch shock straight up into that area. On trailers that have been towed hard, that seam opens as a hairline that widens under the front window. It admits water down the inside of the front wall where nothing is visible until the front bunk or dinette floor goes soft. We check that seam on every laminated Dutchmen that comes in with front end damage as a matter of routine.
Astoria pin box plate deformation
The Astoria pin box mounts to a plate on the upper deck frame, and backing a fifth wheel into a hitch at an angle puts a twisting load into that plate rather than a straight one. The plate takes a small permanent set that nobody sees, and afterward the trailer sits fractionally twisted on the hitch. The symptom owners describe is uneven tyre wear or a trailer that pulls to one side. Straightening the cap or the front wall without checking the pin box plate leaves the cause in place.
