A Branch Strike That Showed Up Two Weeks Later As A Binding Slide

Scope of work
- Moisture grid taken across the roof edge, the ceiling panel and the slide opening header

- Corner post straightened and the slide opening squared with measurements at all four corners
- Roof membrane replaced from the front cap seam back to the rear, decking replaced in one section

- Ceiling panel and insulation replaced where moisture had reached, interior trim reinstalled
- Roof penetrations resealed with a fresh termination bar and self leveling lap sealant, full water test

What happened
This repair was paid for directly by the owner rather than through a claim, and the reason is worth stating because it comes up constantly. The deductible on the policy was high enough that the likely approved scope sat close to it, and filing would have started a process the owner did not want on his record for a number that was not going to move much. That is a legitimate decision and it is his to make. We wrote the quote the same way we would have written the scope for a carrier, with operations, hours and price bands, so he was deciding with real information rather than a lump sum.
The branch strike itself looked minor and it was, in isolation. A torn membrane edge and a bent section of roof rail is a day of work if that is genuinely all of it. What brought him in was not the branch. It was that two weeks later the curbside slide started binding on retraction, and he assumed those were unrelated problems because they happened at different times and in different places on the coach. They were the same problem.
Energy from a roof edge strike travels down the corner post. On a Class C the corner post is frequently framing the slide opening, so when it moves, the opening it frames moves with it. The slide room is a rigid box built to fit a specific rectangle, and a rectangle that is now a slight parallelogram will bind on one edge every single cycle. It will also chew its own seals on that edge, and once a wiper seal is worn the room stops sealing to the wall on retraction, which is where the ceiling stain came from.
So the sequence mattered more than any individual operation. We squared the opening first, with measurements taken at all four corners with the room both out and in, because a slide opening that measures square empty and moves when the room is deployed is a different problem than one that is simply out of square. Then the membrane and decking, because the roof is upstream of everything and there is no point renewing interior finish under a roof you have not fixed. Then the seals, into an opening that was now correct. Then the ceiling panel and insulation. Doing the seals first, which is what a quick fix looks like, would have put new rubber into a crooked opening and produced the same failure in eighteen months.
The moisture grid was what told us how far the ceiling work had to go. Readings across the roof edge, the ceiling panel and the slide header showed elevated numbers concentrated near the torn membrane and dropping off within about four feet. That gradient defined the replacement boundary. Without the grid you either replace too little, in which case wet insulation stays in the ceiling, or you replace the whole ceiling, in which case the owner pays for material that did not need replacing. Neither is acceptable when someone is writing the check personally.
Thirty two days from arrival, and the last thing done was twenty full slide cycles under load with someone watching the rails, gear rack and motor mounts for uneven loading. That is the test that matters, because a slide that operates correctly once operates correctly once. A slide that operates correctly twenty times in a row with the rails loading evenly is a slide that has been fixed, and the difference is entirely in whether anyone bothered to stand there and watch.

Slide seals replaced, room reinstalled and cycled under load twenty times with rail loading observed.

Ceiling panel and insulation replaced, interior trim reinstalled, full water test. Delivered on day thirty two.
