The point where panel work stops being enough
There is a real threshold between collision repair and restoration, and it is not about how much of the vehicle is damaged. It is about whether the geometry survived. A coach can have an entire side skin destroyed and still be a panel job if the cage underneath held its shape. Another coach can look nearly intact and be a restoration because the floor structure racked two inches and every opening above it is now a parallelogram.
Geometry is what everything else in an RV depends on. Slide rooms need square openings or their seals will never compress evenly. Doors need square apertures. Bonded windshields need an opening that matches the glass. Cabinetry was built to fit walls that were plumb. Once the reference frame has moved, correcting the skin is decoration over a problem that will keep announcing itself for the life of the vehicle.
The second trigger is the material state of the framing itself. Aluminum tube that has bent through a smooth radius can often be pulled back. Aluminum that has kinked has already exceeded its yield and lost section at the kink. Welded steel that has cracked at a joint has no useful strength left there. When the survey finds kinks, cracks or torn welds across multiple members, the honest answer is reconstruction, because pulling that material straight only restores the shape and not the strength.

Rollover and tip-over damage and how it distributes
Rollovers on high sided vehicles produce a distinctive damage signature that is worth understanding, because it is almost never symmetrical. The vehicle rotates about a longitudinal axis, so the first contact is a roof edge or an upper corner, and that corner takes an enormous concentrated load. From there the roof structure tries to resist the full weight of the coach on a set of bows and a perimeter rail that were designed to carry snow load and a walking technician, not the vehicle itself.
What follows is a progressive collapse along the impacted side. The upper corner post folds. The roof bows deflect and the roof edge rolls inward. The sidewall cage on that side goes into compression while the opposite sidewall goes into tension, which frequently opens seams on the side that never touched the ground. Owners are consistently surprised that the undamaged looking side has a two foot seam separation, and this is why.
Tip-overs at low speed, the kind that happen when a jack sinks or a trailer catches a soft shoulder, produce a gentler version of the same pattern with one important difference: the vehicle usually comes to rest against something rather than sliding. The concentrated point load where it rested does very localized, very deep damage, and the rest of the structure has taken a broad twist. Both have to be addressed, and the localized crush is the more obvious of the two by a wide margin.

Front cap replacement and forward cage reconstruction
A destroyed front cap is one of the most common entry points into restoration work, and the cap itself is often the least difficult part. Replacement caps are available for many current and recent models and can be sourced or, where they are discontinued, molded. The difficulty is what the cap was mounted to.
The forward cage on a Class A carries the windshield aperture, the entry step well on some layouts, the dash structure, and the mounting for the front mask, lights and cameras. It is also where a lot of chassis to house interface hardware lives. Rebuilding it means establishing the aperture dimensions from factory specification or from an undamaged reference vehicle, fabricating and fitting members to those dimensions, and only then hanging a cap on it. Fitting the cap first and forcing the structure to it is a shortcut that produces a windshield that will not seal and a cap that stress cracks within a year.
Where the cap is being molded rather than purchased, the sequence adds a plug and mold step, and that is a schedule item measured in weeks rather than days. It is worth doing on a coach with strong remaining value or an unusual configuration, and it is worth being realistic about on a common unit where a used donor cap from a salvage coach is both faster and better matched.

Interior teardown and putting the systems back honestly
Restoration means the interior comes out, and that is where a great deal of the labor in this category actually sits. Cabinetry in a coach is not furniture set against a wall. It is frequently bonded and screwed into the wall structure and contributes stiffness to it, which means removing it changes how the shell behaves and reinstalling it is part of restoring the structure rather than a finishing touch.
Behind the cabinetry sit the runs that make the vehicle usable: twelve volt harnesses, one hundred twenty volt romex, fresh and waste plumbing, LP lines, ducting and low voltage control wiring. Every one of those has to be traced, protected during structural work, and inspected before it goes back. Wiring that was crushed, stretched or heat affected gets replaced rather than tested and hoped over, because insulation damage in a wall cavity is not something anyone will find again for years.
The other reason to be thorough here is water. A structural event usually opened seams, and a house that was rebuilt beautifully and then leaks at a reinstalled window has failed. Every penetration disturbed during the work gets resealed with the correct material for the substrate, and the vehicle gets water tested as a whole before anyone signs anything.

Total loss thresholds and the honest repair decision
Not every severely damaged coach should be rebuilt, and a shop that never says so is not doing the owner a service. Carriers generally total a vehicle when the repair cost approaches a threshold percentage of actual cash value, and on older RVs that threshold arrives quickly because values depreciate faster than repair labor does.
The complicating factor is that actual cash value on a well maintained coach with recent major work can be considerably higher than a book number suggests, and the reverse is also true. A twenty year old unit with a documented history of water intrusion may not be worth restoring even when the collision damage by itself is repairable, because the collision repair does not fix the pre-existing condition that will end the vehicle anyway.
What we do is scope it fully, price it honestly, and lay both numbers next to each other. Where a rebuild makes sense, we say so and explain what the vehicle will be worth afterward. Where it does not, we say that too and help document the condition for the total loss settlement. Owners in Lake Forest and across Orange County are generally best served by having that conversation early rather than after three weeks of teardown, which is why the feasibility review is the first step and not the fourth.

Living with a long project: scheduling, parts and updates
Restoration timelines are long, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. A major rebuild occupies a bay for weeks or months, and the schedule is driven by three things that are only partly under a shop's control: authorization cycles, parts availability and the sequence dependency of the work itself.
Sequence dependency is the one owners underestimate. Structure has to be correct before skin goes on. Skin has to be on before seams are sealed. Seams have to be sealed before primer. Primer and block work have to be complete before color. Color has to cure before reassembly. None of those steps can be run in parallel on the same section, so a delay early in the chain moves everything after it. This is also why adding scope midway costs more than it would have at the start.
Parts are the other lever. Molded caps, model specific trim, slide seals for discontinued rooms and window frames for older units can all run weeks. We order long lead items as soon as the plan is authorized rather than when the sequence reaches them, which is the single most effective thing a shop can do to compress a restoration schedule. Feasibility and scope review
Before any commitment, the vehicle is measured and surveyed to establish whether reconstruction makes sense against its value and remaining service life. That conversation happens first, with numbers, so nobody spends money discovering the answer halfway through.

Strip to structure
Interior, appliances, wiring runs, plumbing, cabinetry and skin come out and off in a documented sequence. Everything removed is tagged and stored. The goal is a bare cage on a chassis, with every damaged member visible from both sides.

Geometry reestablished
The chassis is measured and corrected first, because everything above it references it. Floor structure is squared next, then the cage is rebuilt to it. Diagonal measurements are taken at every stage rather than only at the end.

Cage reconstruction
Bent members are pulled where the material will take it and cut out and replaced where it will not. Joints are welded or riveted to the original construction method, with reinforcement added only where the factory design already carried a doubler.

House rebuild and systems reinstatement
Core, skin, insulation and interior go back in the order they were built. Wiring, plumbing and LP lines disturbed by the damage are inspected and replaced rather than reused where insulation or fittings were compromised.

Refinish, seal and verification
The exterior is refinished as a full body rather than in patches, all seams and penetrations are resealed, and the finished vehicle is water tested, road tested and re-measured before it is signed off and released.
