Box Trucks Repair For Lake Forest Owners
Box trucks are the most common commercial vehicle we repair and the one where the divided manufacture is most obvious. The cab follows chassis maker procedures with published parts and refinish specifications. The body follows nothing published at all, because it was built by a body company to an order and there is no repair manual for it. Working on both means keeping a stock of extrusion sections, FRP panel, rivets and fasteners rather than ordering a part number, and being able to fabricate what the original builder would have.
The most useful assessment we perform on a damaged box truck is checking whether the body is still square on the subframe. Bodies are mounted to the chassis with U bolts or brackets that can shift under impact, and a body that has moved a half inch on its mounts will produce door problems, seam leaks and panel cracking that look like separate issues. Measuring the body diagonals and checking the mounting hardware takes a technician thirty minutes and reframes the entire repair when it turns up something.
Paint on a box truck is really two jobs. The cab is refinished to automotive standards with a color that has a factory code and a known formula. The body is a large flat FRP or aluminum surface, usually white, usually carrying company graphics, and it refinishes closer to a trailer. When a repair crosses from one to the other we plan the transition at the natural break behind the cab rather than trying to carry a blend across two different substrates.
For Lake Forest operators running box trucks for moving, distribution, catering or trade supply, the recurring costs are clearance strikes and dock damage. Both are preventable and neither is entirely avoidable in real operations. Where an operator sees the same damage repeatedly across a fleet, we suggest practical measures such as corner protection, verified height marking in the cab and dock bumper checks. It is not a repair we get paid for, and it saves them a great deal.

Rear corner posts that carry the whole rear of the body
The rear corner posts on a box body are aluminum extrusions that hold the door frame, tie the side wall to the roof and support the rear header. They are also the exact part that contacts a loading dock bumper, a gate post or another vehicle during backing. When a post is crushed, the door frame goes out of square immediately and the roll up door stops tracking. Straightening a crushed extrusion rarely restores it. Sectioning in a new post, splicing it to the existing rail with the correct fastening pattern, and resquaring the door frame is the durable repair.
Lift gate mounting that fatigues the chassis frame rather than the gate
A lift gate hangs off the rear of the frame rails and applies a large bending moment every time it lifts a load. The gate manufacturer specifies a mounting plate and a fastening pattern, and installers do not always follow it. What we find on a truck with several years of hard gate use is elongated bolt holes, cracked mounting plates and, on the worst installations, cracks in the frame rail web itself. Repairing the frame and remounting to the specified pattern with proper fish plates is the correct response, and it is not a job to improvise.
Roll up doors that fail because the body has racked, not because the door is worn
A roll up door on a box truck is a set of hinged slats guided by two tracks that curve into the ceiling. It requires the opening to be square within a fairly tight tolerance. When the body racks, whether from a corner impact, a frame issue or a subframe that has worked loose, the tracks are no longer parallel and the door binds. Operators respond by forcing it, which bends slats and pulls the door out of the track. Squaring the opening comes first. A door installed into a racked opening will fail again in weeks.
Body floors that rot from the underside where nobody inspects
The hardwood floor in a dry freight body sits directly on steel crossmembers, and water that enters at the rear threshold or through a side panel seam sits at that interface. The top face looks fine because it is swept daily. The underside rots, the fasteners lose their bite, and eventually a pallet jack wheel goes through. Checking a box floor from below during any service visit takes minutes and identifies the problem while it is still a section replacement rather than a full floor.
