Police Vehicles Repair For Lake Forest Owners
Patrol vehicle repair is automotive collision work with a substantial upfit layer on top, and the upfit is what separates a shop that can do it from one that cannot. Consoles, partitions, transport seating, weapon mounts, radio and camera systems, lighting and livery all have to come out, be protected, and go back correctly. We document the upfit before disassembly and reinstall to that record, because an agency should not receive a vehicle with an antenna relocated or a console mounted an inch off.
Command and specialty units built on cutaway or van chassis are a different job again, closer to the shuttle and module work elsewhere in this category. They carry generators, shore power, communications equipment, extending masts and interior workstations, all mounted to a body that was not originally designed around them. Structural repair on one of those starts with understanding what the upfitter attached and where, and it proceeds with the same documentation discipline we apply to apparatus.
Agencies serving Lake Forest and the surrounding cities generally have a defined vendor process and specific expectations about documentation, invoicing and turnaround. We work to that process rather than around it, we provide photographic documentation of the repair, and we return vehicles with the upfit tested and functional rather than merely reinstalled.
What goes wrong on these
Push bumper mounting that transfers impact directly into the frame horns
A push bumper is bolted to brackets that attach to the frame horns or the front structure, and it is designed to take contact. What that means in a collision is that impact bypasses the energy absorbing bumper structure and goes straight into the mounting points. Damage is often modest at the push bar and significant at the frame horns and the radiator support. A repair that straightens the push bar and refinishes the bumper cover without measuring the structure behind it leaves a vehicle whose crash structure is compromised.
Roof mounted lighting that leaks after every reinstallation
Light bars mount to the roof through brackets that either clamp to the rain gutter or bolt through the roof panel. Every removal and reinstallation is a chance for a leak, and patrol vehicles have their lighting removed and reinstalled repeatedly across a service life and at decommissioning. Water entering at a roof bolt runs down the headliner and into the A pillar. When we reinstall roof equipment we treat every penetration as a sealing detail with primer, a proper gasket and a bedded fastener rather than a bead of sealant on top.
Partitions and prisoner seating that are structure once they are installed
A partition and a polymer transport seat are bolted into the floor pan and the B pillar structure, and once installed they change how the occupant compartment behaves in a collision. Repair after an incident has to restore both the vehicle structure and the upfit mounting to their original condition. Reinstalling a partition into a repaired floor pan that was not restored to load bearing condition produces a vehicle that looks correct and is not. We treat upfit anchorage as safety structure.
Livery reproduction where the graphics are agency identity
Patrol vehicle livery is specified by the agency down to stripe width, placement, reflectivity and lettering, and it is frequently applied over multiple panels with continuous lines. Repairing a single panel means recreating a line that has to align with the adjacent panels precisely. We photograph and measure the livery before disassembly, reproduce the graphics to the agency specification, and align across panels. A stripe that steps a quarter inch at a door gap is visible in every photograph the vehicle appears in.
Damage we see most
- Front bumper, push bar and lighting damage from contact and pursuit use
- Quarter panel and door damage from tight urban maneuvering
- Push bumper mounting bracket deformation into the frame horns
- Light bar mounting damage and roof penetration leaks
- Partition and prisoner seat mounting damage after an incident
- Rear cargo area equipment mounting damage
- Livery graphic damage requiring exact reproduction
