A mobile office or workshop is a van, box body or trailer fitted out as a working office, engineering station or trade shop with benches, storage, climate control and independent power. A rolling office or workshop is the most improvised vehicle type we handle, and that is not a criticism. These builds grow. A business buys a van, fits a bench, adds a rack the following year, wires a battery bank the year after and installs a slide room when the crew grew. Nobody drew any of it and the person who did the wiring has usually moved on. Our first hour on one of these vehicles is spent understanding what is actually in front of us, tracing circuits, checking what is behind panels and photographing the layout. That documentation ends up being useful to the operator long after the repair is finished.

The recurring theme in this type is load concentration. Offices and shops put heavy, high-cycle loads into a structure that was designed to carry evenly distributed cargo. Benches, vises, compressors, tool chests, battery banks and equipment racks all deliver force at a handful of fasteners. Nearly every body failure we repair on this type traces back to one of those points. That is why our estimates on this vehicle type frequently include an attachment redesign line. Repairing the panel without addressing the attachment means the operator pays twice for the same tear.

Climate and power make up the second half of the work. A field office needs to be usable when it is parked in full sun with a laptop, a plotter and three people inside, which means air conditioning, insulation and enough stored power to run for a working day. Those systems fail in predictable ways: undersized cable getting warm, an inverter mounted in an unventilated cabinet, a battery bank in a location that bakes, an air conditioner drawing more than the circuit was sized for. We repair and rework these installations while the vehicle is here for body work, because the panels are already off and the access will never be better.

Workshop benches bolted through a body side that carries the load alone

A workbench in a van build is used the way a bench in a building is used, which means somebody eventually leans on it, clamps something to it and works a hammer against it. In a building the bench is anchored to a wall with studs behind it. In a van it is often anchored to a body side that is a single sheet of thin metal with a rib every so often. The load goes in at four bolts and the panel takes all of it. What appears from outside is a shallow dimple over each fastener, then a split, then a tear that runs with the panel. The repair is a panel repair plus a redesign of the attachment, spreading the load across a fabricated backing frame that reaches the body ribs rather than concentrating it at four points.

Slide-out office rooms on a chassis that flexes at every driveway

Some field office builds borrow a slide room from the recreational world to create a wider working space when parked. That mechanism was engineered for a coach or a trailer frame with known deflection characteristics, and dropping it into a box body or a commercial chassis changes the picture. The chassis twists differently, the opening moves relative to the room, and the seals that depend on a consistent gap stop sealing consistently. Symptoms are a room that binds partway, uneven seal compression, and water at the lower corners. We square the opening, correct the mechanism alignment, rebuild the seal package to the actual gap, and where the chassis flex is the underlying cause we reinforce the opening so the geometry stops moving.

Compressor and welder mounting that cracks the deck it sits on

Trade workshop builds routinely carry an air compressor, a welder or a generator bolted to the floor or to a deck at the rear. These devices are heavy, they run at a frequency the mounting was never tuned for, and their center of mass sits well above the fasteners. The result is a slow fatigue failure that starts as a hairline at the corner of a mounting plate and finishes as a cracked deck section with a piece of equipment moving around on it. Isolation mounts help and are frequently omitted. When we repair one of these we rebuild the deck section, fabricate a mounting plate sized for the load, add isolation where the equipment tolerates it, and tie the assembly into a structural member rather than into sheet.

Cable pass-throughs that turn a roof into a set of unsealed holes

Field offices accumulate roof penetrations faster than any other vehicle in this category: a cellular antenna, a GPS puck, a radio whip, a data cable, a vent, sometimes a small satellite dish. Each was added on a different day by a different installer, and the common technique is a hole, a grommet and a generous bead of sealant on top. Southern California sun destroys a surface bead within a few seasons. Water then enters and travels along the roof structure to a low point that may be nowhere near the hole, which is why the leak gets misdiagnosed as a window. We strip the penetrations back to clean substrate, install proper glands with mechanical fastening and a bedded seal, and consolidate the runs where several holes can honestly become one.
