Overland And Adventure Travelers
Typical caller: An adventure traveller running a modified truck camper, flatbed build or expedition van with a five figure aftermarket parts list.
Overland rigs break the assumptions that both the recreational vehicle world and the automotive world are built on. A production motorhome has a construction standard, a parts book and a plant that can be called. A production truck has published sectioning procedures and a dealer network. An expedition build has neither. It is a chassis from one company, a habitat from a second, a suspension package from a third, and a set of modifications that the owner specified over four years and documented in a folder of receipts. When something breaks it, there is no procedure to follow, because nobody ever wrote one for this combination.
The practical consequence is that estimating has to be done by disassembly rather than by inspection. Body armour and sliders are excellent at protecting a panel and equally excellent at hiding what happened to it. A rock strike that leaves a scuff on a steel slider can have transmitted enough energy to deform the mounting structure and the body panel behind it. Estimating from outside produces a number that is wrong in both directions at once, too high on the visible cosmetic work and far too low on the structure. So the armour comes off first, before anybody writes anything down.
Roof penetrations are the other recurring story. Overland vehicles carry racks, awnings, solar, ventilation and lights, all of which pass through a roof that is now subject to constant washboard vibration. Fasteners work, the sealant around them fatigues, and water enters at a mount rather than at a seam. Owners chase the leak at the nearest seam for a season before anybody suspects the awning bracket. When we open a roof for any reason on a rig like this, every penetration in the affected area gets its backing evaluated, because putting the same fastener back into the same fatigued laminate simply restarts the clock.
The last thing worth saying is about honesty on obsolete builds. If your habitat came from a small shop that has since closed, there is no replacement panel and no drawing set. What there is, is a fabrication path, and we will price it as fabrication rather than pretending a part exists. That number is usually larger than an owner expects and it is a real number, which is more useful than an optimistic one. What usually goes wrong
The build is worth far more than the vehicle, and nothing in a standard valuation guide reflects a custom flatbed, a composite habitat or an eight thousand dollar suspension package.
Damage from off pavement use is slow and cumulative rather than sudden, so it rarely maps cleanly onto a single insurable event.
Rack and awning mounts loosen from washboard vibration and start working the roof penetrations they pass through, which produces a leak with no obvious cause.
Pop top canvas and the frame it hangs from take a set after any impact, and a top that seats a few millimetres proud lets dust in for the rest of its life.
Lower body armour hides the panel behind it, so a rock strike can deform structure with almost no external evidence until the panel is unbolted.
Builders go out of business, and a habitat module from a shop that closed has no parts channel and no drawings.
Many of these rigs are the owner's primary vehicle, so the downtime is total rather than seasonal.
What we do about it
- Unbolt body armour, sliders and rack systems to inspect the structure behind them rather than estimating around hardware that hides the damage.
- Fabricate replacement composite and aluminum sections for habitat modules where the original builder no longer exists.
- Rebuild pop top frames and seating surfaces so the top closes with even compression across the seal rather than sealing at two corners.
- Re engineer roof penetrations with proper backing and load spreading when a rack mount has begun to work through the panel.
- Refinish textured and matte coatings used on expedition builds rather than defaulting to a gloss automotive finish that will not match.
- Produce an itemised component record for the aftermarket build so the owner has evidence for the file.
How the claim tends to run
- Custom equipment endorsements are the whole ballgame on an overland build and they usually have a limit far below what owners assume. A policy with a modest custom parts and equipment sublimit will pay that sublimit and stop, regardless of the receipts in the glovebox. Read the declarations page for the actual dollar figure rather than the coverage name, and raise it before a trip rather than after a loss.
- Photographic and invoice documentation of the build is the single most valuable thing an overland owner can maintain. Photograph each stage of the build with the component visible, keep the installer invoices, and store the file somewhere that is not inside the vehicle. Adjusters cannot fund what they cannot see existed, and after a fire or a rollover there is nothing left to inspect.
- Off pavement use is not automatically excluded, but competition, timed events and commercial guiding almost always are. Owners who run their rig in a rally or take paying passengers on a guided trip should assume the personal policy will not respond to a loss that occurs during that activity, and should arrange event specific coverage instead of hoping.
- Habitat modules built by a shop that has since closed create a genuine valuation problem, because there is no replacement to price. In these cases the practical route is an appraisal based agreed value policy written before any loss occurs. Once the module is damaged, a carrier has no benchmark other than the labour to fabricate a replacement, and that conversation is far easier when an agreed figure already exists on the policy.
