What happened
Hail on an aluminum skinned trailer is a counting exercise before it is a repair. You put a light source at a low angle across the panel and the dents that were invisible in flat daylight suddenly cover the whole surface. The question is never whether there is damage, it is whether the density on a given panel is low enough to work and high enough to replace, and that judgment has to be made panel by panel with the count written down. We mapped it that way and photographed each panel under the raking light so the estimate had something behind it other than an opinion.
The roof was the real story and nobody had been up there. Four punctures through the membrane, which the owner knew about, over decking that nobody had assessed, which he did not. A membrane is a wear item sitting on structure that is not, and the two get treated identically on most estimates because from above they look like one surface. Moisture readings across a mapped grid showed elevated numbers around the largest puncture and normal readings twelve feet away, which is exactly the gradient you want to see. It says water entered recently through the hole rather than gradually through a neglected seal, and it is the difference between a covered storm loss and a wear exclusion.
The supplement went in when the membrane came off and the decking under the largest puncture turned out to be soft across about six feet. That was not visible from above, it was not visible from inside, and it would not have been findable without pulling the membrane. This is the single most common shape a hail claim takes on a recreational vehicle: the visible damage is funded, the structure underneath is discovered afterward, and the file has to accommodate that. Attaching the moisture grid with locations and values got it approved without a second round of questions.
The curb scrape was a separate problem and it is worth explaining why we made a point of it. The owner picked it up at a campground about a week after the storm, backing into a site, and he reported both together because he was bringing the trailer in once. Processed as a single comprehensive loss, some of the storm damage would likely have been attributed to the impact event, and depending on the policy the deductible treatment could have gone either way. Hail has a distinct pattern and distribution that a gate post does not, so we documented them as two damage sets with their own photographs, their own locations and their own mechanisms. That took an extra hour and it kept the record clean.
Skin replacement on an aluminum trailer is a rivet job as much as a panel job. Getting the new panel to read as original means matching the rivet pattern, the rivet type and the spacing, because a repair that uses a different fastener layout announces itself from across a campground even after it is painted. The roadside and front panels were replaced, the pattern matched, and the graphics were reproduced from photographs of the curbside and printed as new film, since the original kit for this model has not been available for years.
Thirty nine days from arrival to delivery, which is longer than an owner expects for what he described on the phone as hail dents. Most of that calendar time was the roof, and most of the roof time was the decking section that would have kept quietly rotting under a new membrane if we had patched the punctures and moved on. That is the version of this repair that costs four thousand dollars and comes back in two years as a fifteen thousand dollar floor job.
