Hail behaves differently on every roof material

A membrane roof over foam and thin decking has very little resistance to a concentrated impact. Hail bruises it: the stone crushes the substrate under the membrane without necessarily breaking the surface, leaving a shallow dimple that is difficult to see except in raking light early or late in the day. Those bruises matter because the crushed substrate is now a low spot that holds water and the membrane over it has been stretched thin. Some of them are outright punctures that only reveal themselves at the next rain.

A one piece fiberglass roof resists penetration far better and fails differently. Impacts produce star cracks and gelcoat crazing rather than dents, and the damage concentrates where the laminate is supported unevenly. Those cracks are structural paths for water into the laminate itself, which is why a fiberglass roof that looks intact from a distance can still need laminate repair after a significant storm.

Aluminum roofs and aluminum sided trailers dent visibly, and they hold that dent permanently because the panels are thin and constrained. The damage is unmistakable and it is also the case where repair economics get difficult fastest, for reasons covered in the section on sidewalls. In every case the assessment happens on the roof with the surface examined in raking light, not from the ground and not from a walkaround.

Aluminum sidewalls dent, laminated sidewalls crack

A corrugated aluminum sided trailer takes hail as a field of dimples across the upper portion of each panel. The sheets are thin, they are bonded or riveted to the framing along their length, and they are not accessible from behind for the kind of push and pull work that automotive dent repair depends on. Paintless dent repair, which is the standard answer on a car, largely does not transfer here because there is nothing to get a tool behind and because the corrugation profile constrains the metal.

That means aluminum siding damage is generally addressed by replacing the affected panels, and RV siding panels commonly run the length of the trailer rather than being small sections. Replacing one is a substantial operation involving trim removal, awning rail removal, window removal in some cases and a sealing rebuild afterward. It is also why a serious hail event on an older aluminum trailer can produce a repair figure that approaches the value of the unit, and we will tell you when the arithmetic looks like that.

Laminated fiberglass sidewalls behave the opposite way. The gelcoat surface over a bonded laminate does not dent, it fractures. Damage presents as star cracks, pinholes and crazing, which is far less visible and far more repairable, because composite repair is done from the outside. Ground out, laminate, fair, prime and refinish. The caution on laminated walls is that a fractured skin admits water into the bond line, and water in a bond line becomes delamination over the following seasons, so a cosmetically minor crack is worth repairing rather than watching.

Rooftop components take the worst of it

The most consistently destroyed items in a hail event are the plastic parts on top. Vent lids are thin polycarbonate or ABS that has already been ultraviolet embrittled for years, and they shatter readily. Skylight domes over the shower crack or hole. Air conditioner shrouds, which sit higher than anything else and present a large curved plastic surface, split along the ribs. Refrigerator and plumbing vent caps break. Antenna housings crack. Solar panel glass can spider without the panel obviously failing, which shows up later as a drop in output.

All of these are individually replaceable and all of them are also water entry points, so they are the urgent part of the repair rather than the cosmetic part. A shattered vent lid on a coach parked outside in Orange County is not a problem for weeks and then becomes a serious problem in one afternoon of December rain. When a coach comes to us after a storm, temporary protection of open penetrations happens on arrival, before the estimate is even finished.

This category is also where a claim can be undercounted. An adjuster looking at a coach from the ground, or a shop that assesses without getting on the roof, can miss a cracked shroud, a crazed solar panel or a bruised membrane entirely. We photograph every rooftop item individually with the damage visible, because the difference between a documented component and an undocumented one is whether it appears in the settlement.

Documenting a comprehensive claim properly

Hail is a comprehensive claim on most recreational vehicle policies, which means it is generally payable without regard to fault and subject to your comprehensive deductible. What determines whether the settlement covers the actual repair is the quality of the damage documentation, and hail is unusually easy to under document because so much of it is out of sight and low contrast.

Our approach is systematic. Overall photographs establishing the vehicle, then panel by panel documentation of the sidewalls shot in raking light so the dimpling reads in a photograph, then individual close ups of every damaged rooftop component, then membrane bruising shot with a straightedge or a marker for scale, then any interior damage that resulted from a penetration. Everything gets written into the estimate as a discrete line rather than bundled, because a bundled line is a line an adjuster cannot evaluate.

Supplements are normal on hail work and they are not a sign that something went wrong. Damage that could not be seen at the initial assessment surfaces once components come off and once the coach has been through a rain event. We document each supplement the same way the original estimate was documented, submit it with photographs, and do not proceed on that portion until it is authorized. Insurance billed work may be invoiced at carrier negotiated labor rates that differ from the posted retail rates.

Repair methods, and what does not carry over from automotive work

The instinct is to apply what everyone knows from car repair, and most of it does not transfer. Paintless dent repair depends on reaching the back of a panel and on metal that will relax back to shape. RV siding is thin, corrugated, bonded or riveted along its length and generally inaccessible from behind. Filler and refinish work, which is routine on a steel automotive panel, has to be approached differently on a laminated fiberglass wall where the substrate flexes and where the original surface is gelcoat rather than paint.

What we actually do depends on the material. Membrane roofs get bruised areas cut out, the crushed substrate repaired or replaced, and a bonded or welded patch installed, or on widespread damage a full membrane replacement. Fiberglass caps and sidewalls get composite repair: crack chasing, grinding to sound laminate, layup, fairing, priming and refinishing with a color match to the surrounding panel. Aluminum siding gets panel replacement. Rooftop components get replaced outright, because a cracked plastic part is not repairable in any way worth paying for.

Refinish work brings its own consideration on an older coach. Gelcoat and paint both fade over years of sun, so a perfectly formulated match to the original factory color will not match the panel as it exists today. Blending into adjacent panels and across natural breaks is how that is handled, and on a large area the honest answer is sometimes that refinishing a whole side produces a better result than an invisible patch attempt that will not stay invisible.

Damage discovered months after the storm

A large share of hail damage on recreational vehicles is found long after the event, and the reason is simply that nobody climbs on the roof. The coach was hit during a trip through hail country, it looked fine from the ground, it came home, it sat, and the first symptom appears the following winter as a ceiling stain or a musty smell. By then the water has been working on the decking and the ceiling assembly for months.

This creates a claims problem worth understanding. Carriers cover sudden and accidental damage, and they exclude gradual deterioration, so the longer the gap between the event and the report the more argument there is about how much of the current condition is impact damage and how much is subsequent water damage that could have been avoided. Reporting promptly and getting a documented inspection is the single most useful thing an owner can do after driving through a storm.

The practical advice is straightforward. After any hail exposure, get on the roof or have someone do it, and look specifically at vent lids, the skylight dome, the air conditioner shroud, the membrane in raking light and the awning fabric from underneath with light coming through it. Small punctures in awning fabric are visible from below as points of daylight and they are one of the most reliable indicators that the roof took hits too.

We document and replace damaged rooftop equipment as part of the repair, and solar in particular is easy to overlook. Hail can spider the glass on a panel without producing an obvious hole, and the panel keeps working at reduced output so nothing seems wrong until you notice the array is not keeping up. That is a documented loss and it belongs in the claim. Antenna housings, satellite domes and their mounting feet get the same individual photography and line item treatment as vents and shrouds, because anything not documented tends not to appear in the settlement.
