Refuse and Recycling Trucks Repair For Lake Forest Owners
Refuse trucks work harder than almost anything else on the road and they do it in an environment engineered to destroy steel. That combination means structural repair on a refuse body is a regular maintenance activity rather than an exceptional event. Operators who plan for it, with scheduled inspection and staged repair, keep bodies in service far longer than operators who wait for a failure. We write our findings so a fleet can plan on that basis.
The repairs themselves are heavy fabrication. Plating a hopper floor, replacing a section of side wall, rebuilding a tailgate corner, fabricating a lifter mounting gusset and repairing packer structure are all in-house operations, and the finish work matters as much as the welding. A repair that is structurally perfect and left uncoated inside a hopper has a short life. Surface preparation and coating selection are part of the job specification here, not an afterthought.

Leachate corrosion that attacks from inside every seam
Liquid from compacted waste is aggressively corrosive and it finds every weld seam, every fastener penetration and every low point in the body. Unlike road salt, it works from the inside out, so a body can look serviceable while the interior of a seam has thinned considerably. Repair welding on a corroded refuse body requires cutting back to sound material rather than welding to thin steel, and it requires recoating the interior properly, because a bright new weld in an uncoated hopper is the next failure point.
Lifter arm mounting that cracks from the cycle count rather than from any incident
An automated side loader arm or a front loader fork assembly picks up a container, lifts it over the cab and dumps it hundreds of times per shift. The mounting structure where those arms attach to the body sees an enormous number of high load cycles. Cracks start at the toe of a weld on a mounting gusset and propagate. Because the arm keeps working, operators frequently do not notice until the crack is substantial. Inspecting those welds as part of any body work is standard practice here.
Tailgate seals that fail as a geometry problem rather than a gasket problem
A refuse body tailgate seals along a long perimeter under packing pressure, and it only works if the hinge geometry and the latching are correct. Worn hinge pins, a bent tailgate or a body that has bulged from overloading all leave a gap that leaks liquid onto the street. Operators replace seals repeatedly. Restoring hinge pin and bushing condition, straightening the tailgate and correcting body bulge is what actually stops the leak, and it also stops the corrosion that the leak path is causing at the same time.
Body sides that bulge outward from packing pressure and overloading
A packer applies substantial pressure to the load, and that pressure pushes outward on the body sides. Bodies are designed for it, but a truck that is routinely overloaded, or one whose internal structure has corroded, will bulge between the side posts. The bulge is progressive and it eventually distorts the tailgate opening and the top rail. Repairing it means restoring or adding internal structure rather than pulling the panel flat, because a panel pulled flat over a compromised post bulges again on the next route.
