Tow and Recovery Trucks Repair For Lake Forest Owners
Recovery equipment lives a hard life and it fails structurally rather than cosmetically. Booms, underlifts, decks and winch mounting all carry heavy dynamic loads applied at awkward angles, frequently in poor conditions. That makes structural inspection more valuable on this type than on almost anything else we handle, because a crack in an underlift mount is a genuinely serious matter and it is also completely findable during a routine look underneath.
Fabrication capability is central to this work. Reinforcing an underlift mount, sectioning a deck rail, rebuilding a boom pivot, fabricating a new cab guard and repairing a subframe are all made rather than ordered. We build these to the load the equipment actually sees, which is often more than the original design accounted for on a truck that has spent years doing heavier recovery work than it was specified for.

What goes wrong on these
Underlift mounting that carries a load the chassis frame did not anticipate
An underlift picks up a disabled vehicle by its wheels or its suspension and carries it cantilevered behind the truck, applying a large bending moment into the subframe and the chassis rails. The mounting structure fatigues at the same handful of welds on nearly every unit we see. Cracks propagate from the toe of the weld at the rear crossmember connection. Repairing the crack without adding proper reinforcement returns the truck to the same duty cycle that produced it, and the crack comes back.
Deck rails that wear until a vehicle no longer tracks straight during loading
A rollback deck slides on rails and rollers, and every load drags across the same surfaces. Rails wear, rollers flatten and the deck develops play, which makes loading unpredictable at exactly the moment an operator needs it to be predictable. The symptom is a deck that pulls to one side or binds partway through its travel. Restoring rail surfaces, replacing rollers and correcting the slide geometry is the repair, and it is a safety matter as much as a convenience one.
Approach ramps and deck tails bent by loading on grades
Recovery work happens where the vehicle is, which is frequently on a grade, in a ditch or against a curb. Loading in those conditions puts the deck tail and the approach ramps in contact with pavement under load, and they bend. A bent tail changes the loading angle for every subsequent job and increases the chance of contacting the loaded vehicle. Straightening or replacing the tail and ramp structure and reinforcing the high contact areas is worth doing before the geometry becomes a hazard.
Cab guards that take contact from the load rather than from an impact
The cab guard on a wrecker or rollback protects the cab from a load that shifts forward, and it also takes contact from winch cables, chains and the loaded vehicle during positioning. It gets bent gradually rather than dramatically, and operators tend to accept the deformation because the cab is fine. A deformed cab guard has unknown remaining capacity and its mounting has been loaded. Repairing or replacing it and inspecting the mounting is one of the items we will actively push an operator not to defer.
