Flatbeds are simple in concept and demanding in execution, because everything on them is structural. There is no cosmetic panel on a flatbed body. The deck carries load, the rails carry tie-downs, the headboard protects the cab and the subframe transfers everything into the chassis. That means every repair on the body is a structural repair, and the questions we ask an operator are about how the truck is loaded rather than about how it looks.

Fabrication is a large share of what flatbed work involves. Replacement stake pockets, rub rail sections, headboard structures, toolbox mounts, hitch plates and deck extensions are all made rather than ordered on most trucks. We build them from the same material and section as the original where that is appropriate and heavier where the observed failure justifies it, and we finish them so the repair does not become the truck's next corrosion site.

Headboards that get bent by a load that never left the deck
The headboard on a flatbed is the last defense between a shifting load and the cab, and it does its job in a way that is not always dramatic. A hard stop with an inadequately secured load pushes the headboard forward, and the deformation is often modest enough that the operator keeps working. The next hard stop finds a headboard that no longer has its original strength. Any bent headboard is a safety item rather than a cosmetic one, and repairing it means restoring the structure and its mounting to the deck, not just straightening the visible bend.
Stake pockets that tear because the load path ends at a thin weld
Stake pockets are the tie-down points on most flatbeds, and every strap or chain load runs through a small welded pocket into the side rail. On a heavily used truck those welds are the highest cycle joints on the body. They crack, then tear the rail material around them, and the operator loses a tie-down point. Welding the pocket back on without reinforcing the rail produces a repair that fails at the next pocket. We address the rail as well as the pocket and, where the loading pattern justifies it, add proper rated tie-down hardware.
Deck to subframe mounting that works loose and lets the deck move on the chassis
A flatbed deck is attached to the chassis frame through a subframe with bolted or U bolt connections, usually with wood or rubber isolators. Those connections loosen over time, and a deck that moves relative to the chassis wears its mounting, creaks under load and eventually elongates the mounting holes. The operator hears a noise and rarely investigates. Retorquing on a schedule prevents it. Once the holes are elongated the repair means new hardware, repaired mounting brackets and sometimes a section of the subframe.
Wood decks that fail at the crossmember contact face rather than on top
Apitong and hardwood decking is durable on its wearing surface and vulnerable where it sits on steel. Water and debris collect at that contact, the wood stays damp, and the board loses thickness from below. A deck that looks weathered but serviceable can be substantially reduced where each crossmember passes beneath it. Probing from underneath is the check. When we replace decking we clean and coat the crossmember tops and provide drainage so the replacement lasts longer than the original.
