Vintage and Classic RVs Repair For Lake Forest Owners
Vintage coach work is the least standardized thing this shop does, and it is also some of the most satisfying. There is no estimating guide, no parts diagram and frequently no service literature. What exists is the vehicle itself, the undamaged side of it as a reference, and a body technician who can read how the factory assembled it. Owners who bring a GMC Motorhome or a Travco to Yorba Linda from Lake Forest are usually already deep into a project and want a shop that will engage with what the vehicle actually is rather than quote it as though parts were available.
The estimating approach on a classic is deliberately different. Rather than writing a fixed scope from an inspection, we write a phased plan: teardown and assessment first, with a documented findings report and photographs, then a scope and a price for the actual work with the structure exposed. That protects the owner from a number that was always going to be wrong and protects the shop from committing to hours it cannot know. Most vintage projects run in stages with owner decision points between them, and that is the honest way to run them.
Refinishing a classic raises a preservation question that only the owner can answer. Original single stage lacquer or enamel with honest patina has value to some owners and looks tired to others. Reproducing an original two tone scheme with period correct striping is achievable and takes longer than a modern base and clear job because of masking and because the color separations were often hand laid. We will do either, and we will say plainly which one the vehicle is a better candidate for based on how much original finish is left to work with.
The systems inside a vintage coach are their own project. Aluminum branch wiring, ungrounded circuits, original copper plumbing with lead solder joints, and gas appliances that predate current design standards are all common. When we open a wall for structural work we document everything we find and give the owner the option to modernize while the wall is open, because a rewire done with the panels off costs a fraction of a rewire done later through access holes. That timing conversation is one of the most valuable things a shop can offer on a car or coach of this age.

Panels that must be rolled and drilled because no replacement exists
There is no parts counter for a 1974 coach. A damaged lower side panel is not ordered, it is made, and making it means creating a pattern from the undamaged side, shearing and breaking new stock, matching the rivet pitch to the original so the repair reads correctly, and finding a rivet head profile that looks right. This is metal fabrication with a restoration standard rather than collision repair, and it is priced by the hour because there is no published time for a part that does not exist. Owners who understand that going in are almost always happier with the result.
Hidden wood rot that turns a cosmetic estimate into a structural one
Coaches of this era used solid wood framing behind aluminum, and fifty years of failed window seals means that framing is frequently gone in the areas you cannot see. A vintage coach that presents with a dented corner very often has soft framing behind the dent, and the aluminum is holding the shape rather than the wood. We probe and moisture test before writing anything, and we tell owners plainly that on a coach this old the visible damage is a starting point rather than a scope. That conversation is uncomfortable once and much better than a supplement that triples the number after teardown.
Dissimilar metal corrosion at every steel fastener through aluminum
Aluminum skin fastened with steel screws or contacting a steel subframe corrodes at the contact point, and by now these vehicles have decades of it. It shows as a white powdery bloom under the paint, a stain running down from a fastener, or a panel that has thinned to foil around a bracket. Simply replacing the fastener repeats the failure. The correct approach is to isolate the joint with a barrier, use compatible hardware, and remove the corroded aluminum rather than painting over it, because paint over active corrosion lifts within a year in a coastal climate.
Original curved glass and acrylic that has no modern equivalent
Several classic coaches used compound curved windshields, wraparound acrylic panels or one-off side glass that is no longer produced in any form. When those are damaged, the options are a specialist reproduction, a laminated flat glass adaptation with a modified frame, or a fabricated acrylic replacement. Each of those has a real cost and a real appearance consequence, and the honest thing to do is lay all three out with pricing rather than promise a match that does not exist. Owners restoring a GMC or a Travco generally want to know the tradeoff rather than be protected from it.
